Hardware Design Engineer

Job Title: Electronic Hardware Engineer

We are seeking an experienced PCB Design Engineer to support hardware development efforts on a contract basis. The contractor will focus primarily on schematic capture and PCB design using Altium Designer, with secondary responsibilities involving FPGA‑related interfaces and support. The role requires a high level of independence, the ability to produce high‑quality engineering deliverables, and hands‑on experience supporting critical and safety‑relevant electronic systems.

Scope of Work / Responsibilities:

PCB & Hardware DesignLead schematic capture, component selection, and PCB layout in Altium Designer for complex, multi‑layer boards.Create and maintain footprints, symbols, and design libraries.Ensure designs comply with electrical, safety, and manufacturability requirements.Support designs intended for high‑reliability and safety‑critical applications.Perform hardware verification, including bench testing, board bring‑up, debugging, and functional validation.Generate test plans, execute tests, and document results comprehensively.Collaborate with FPGA engineers to align hardware interfaces, constraints, timing, and IO requirements.Review and interpret HDL interface specifications as they relate to board design.

Required Qualifications

5+ years of experience in electronic hardware or PCB design roles.Expert proficiency with Altium Designer (schematic, layout, library management).Experience designing, verifying, and supporting critical or safety-related electronic systems.Working knowledge of FPGA-based system requirements (VHDL/Verilog familiarity preferred).Strong understanding of digital/analog electronics and high‑speed design principles.Ability to work independently, manage workload, and deliver high‑quality outputs on schedule.

Preferred Experience

Experience in regulated or safety-critical industries (nuclear, defense, aerospace, medical, industrial controls).Familiarity with common FPGA and PLD tools (SignalTap, logic analyzers, simulation tools).Strong troubleshooting, root‑cause analysis, and documentation skills.Experience creating designs optimized for manufacturability and testability (DFM/DFT).

This is a Contract position based out of Wilmington, NC.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $55.00 - $75.00/hr.
