Job Description
The Grants Financial Analyst will support all aspects of financial operations for the Research business unit. The successful candidate will build effective, collaborative relationships with Principal Investigators and Scientists, managing their financial grant portfolios as the primary point of contact for post-award grant activities. This role includes financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, regulatory compliance, expense analysis, and financial reporting. The analyst will also work strategically with internal departments, research programs, and management to provide financial analysis, reporting, and accounting services.
Responsibilities
+ Build strong working relationships with Principal Investigators, Scientists, and their teams, serving as the main point of contact for post-award grant operations and portfolio management.
+ Perform financial planning, budgeting, compliance monitoring, documentation, expense analysis, financial reporting, reconciliations, and communication with granting agencies for assigned portfolios.
+ Continuously review assigned portfolios to assess grant status, spending patterns, and burn rates to identify funding requirements or potential shortfalls.
+ Communicate and report potential funding deficiencies in a timely manner to Principal Investigators, Scientists, and the Manager, Finance and Research Services.
+ Collaborate with Corporate Finance, Payroll, Human Resources, and Capital Accounting to ensure smooth processes and effective resolution of financial issues.
+ Prepare grant closeout activities, including reconciliations, financial status reports, final invoices, budget finalization, and required external reporting.
+ Review general ledger transactions and grant contracts for compliance with accounting standards, internal policies, and granting agency regulations.
+ Work closely with Payroll to resolve payroll rejections and process salary cost transfers.
+ Conduct month-end reporting tasks, support external audit preparation for specific balance sheet accounts, and complete monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting, variance analysis, and reconciliations.
+ Support capital accounting and forecasting processes.
+ Work with sensitive and strategic information related to research grants and contracts, including implementing cost-containment measures when required.
+ Support education and training for Principal Investigators, Scientists, and their teams by assessing needs and resolving issues related to grant accounts, analysis, and financial processes.
+ Review and enhance internal controls and assist in ensuring compliance with internal control frameworks, PSAB accounting guidelines, organizational policies, CICA Handbook standards, and granting agency requirements.
+ Contribute to an environment that promotes best practices, high standards, and innovation.
+ Develop additional analysis and reporting—regular or ad hoc—to meet management’s need for timely, accurate, and relevant financial information.
+ Perform other related duties as assigned by management.

Essential Skills
+ Financial analysis, reporting, and forecasting
+ Reconciliation and general accounting processes
+ Experience with grant funding
+ Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including H&V lookups and formulas
+ Strong verbal and written communication skills
+ Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance or Business Administration from a recognized institution or equivalent experience
+ Experience with large ERP systems and SAP
Additional Skills & Qualifications
+ A professional accounting designation (CA, CMA, CGA) or equivalent experience
+ Excel Power BI Macros
+ Bilingualism (French/English) or proficiency in a second language
Work Environment
The position offers a hybrid work environment with the flexibility to work from home three days a week, with Mondays and Wednesdays in-office, and a flexible third day. The work week consists of 37.5 hours, with the hours ranging from 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM. The role is demanding, especially during year-end, with potential weekend work.

The pay range for this position is $40.00 - $45.00/hr.
