Position Summary:
Under the supervision of the Associate Director, Food and Dining, the Food Services Officer manages continuous improvement of McGill’s food service operations. Operating within a complex, multi-stakeholder environment, applies professional judgment, analytical expertise, to ensure compliance, operational efficiency, and service excellence across the various food service providers. Conduct audits, liaise with internal departments, and support the team. Work closely with SHHS Facilities and McGill FMAS to schedule repairs and maintenance of food service infrastructure.
Primary Responsibility:
· Conduct regular in-person audits of food service operations to ensure compliance with Ministère de l’Agriculture, des Pêcheries et de l’Alimentation du Quebec (MAPAQ) standards and McGill’s internal food safety protocols. · Evaluate food handling, storage, preparation, and sanitation practices across all dining units.· Document findings and recommendations using Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, Outlook).· Collaborate with chefs, food managers, and service staff to implement corrective actions and continuous improvement plans.· Liaising with SHHS Facilities and McGill FMAS to ensure timely repairs and maintenance of food service equipment and infrastructure.· Track and report on maintenance issues, affecting food safety or operational efficiency.· Provide training and guidance to staff on food safety with the best practices and regulatory updates.· Support operational planning and documentation for seasonal and cyclical staffing, maintenance schedules, and compliance reporting.· Liaise with Human Resources and other departments on matters affecting food service operations.· Lead the development and implementation of food safety audit frameworks and performance metrics aligned with institutional goals.· Analyze audit data to identify systemic issues, trends, and opportunities for operational improvement.· Prepare reports and recommendations for senior management, contributing to strategic planning and decision-making.· Serve as a subject matter expert on food safety and regulatory compliance, advising leadership and cross-functional teams.· Participate in cross-departmental initiatives to enhance service delivery, sustainability, and risk mitigation.· Ensure alignment of food service operations with institutional policies, government regulations, and industry best practices.· Contribute to the development and revision of internal policies and procedures related to food safety and infrastructure maintenance.· Represent Food and Dining Services in institutional committees and working groups related to health, safety, and operational excellence. Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities· Strong understanding of Quebec’s Ministère de l’Agriculture, des Pêcheries et de l’Alimentation du Quebec (MAPAQ) regulations.· Valid Ministère de l’Agriculture, des Pêcheries et de l’Alimentation du Quebec (MAPAQ) food safety certification required.· Preferable a degree in Culinary Arts, Food Safety, Hospitality Management or related field.· Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).· Excellent communication, bilingual, organizational, and analytical skills.· Ability to work collaboratively across departments and with unionized staff.· Demonstrated ability to assess complex operational challenges and propose data-driven solutions.· Experience leading cross-functional initiatives or teams in a unionized environment.· Ability to manage multiple priorities, timelines, and stakeholders effectively.· Skilled in preparing and presenting reports to senior leadership and external regulatory bodies.· Travel required between multiple dining locations, as well as between the Downtown and Macdonald campuses.· Evening or weekend work required during audits, maintenance coordination, and special events.
