Overview
We are seeking a passionate and driven Flight Test Engineer Lead to join the flight test team. This role offers the opportunity to lead a talented team of flight test engineers while applying a wide range of skills including developing detailed flight test plans for experimental CTOL/VTOL fly‑by‑wire aircraft, executing testing as a crewmember, and analyzing test data.
This role includes developing flight test program strategies and executing both development and certification flight testing. The environment is fast‑paced, requiring close collaboration with system designers, adaptability to shifting test scenarios, and strong leadership.
The flight test team is based in Marina, CA, with opportunities for deployments worldwide. Candidates relocating to the Marina area will initially support short‑duration deployments to Edwards AFB.
Key ResponsibilitiesLeadership
+ Lead a team of up to 10 flight test engineers, providing mentorship and managerial support.
+ Manage the flight test program in assigned technical/operational areas.
+ Collaborate with other Flight Test leads to implement and improve flight test processes.
Flight Test Planning & Execution
+ Develop test programs to expand vehicle envelope and capabilities from experimental development through certification testing.
+ Perform flight test planning, readiness reviews, briefs/debriefs, and act as a crewmember during test execution.
+ Conduct post‑flight data analysis.
+ Work as a member of the flight crew, monitoring real‑time data to ensure safe and proper test execution.
+ Advise flight test pilots on the nature of data affecting real‑time safety, efficiency, and effectiveness.
Engineering & Analysis
+ Conduct engineering analysis of flight test data to support aircraft design and certification deliverables.
+ Coordinate with engineering groups to ensure subject matter experts contribute to planning and execution.
+ Support troubleshooting and root‑cause investigations for issues observed during flight testing.
+ Develop expert‑level knowledge of the aircraft and systems under test.
Documentation & Administrative Duties
+ Report on completed tests, including observed deficiencies and findings of compliance.
+ Complete administrative tasks including configuration management, squawk reporting, flight limitation management, and test card creation.
+ Develop flight manuals and supporting documentation to ensure safe vehicle operation.
+ Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional Skills & QualificationsRequired
+ Bachelor of Science in Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering, or related technical field; or equivalent experience.
+ Minimum 10 years experimental flight test experience as a Flight Test Engineer.
+ Excellent interpersonal communication across diverse technical disciplines.
+ Strong technical and analytical abilities.
+ Ability to work independently and within a team.
+ Ability to work extended hours and travel as required.
+ Proficiency in reading and speaking English.
+ At least 30% travel required.
Desired
+ Experience managing a technical team.
+ FTE graduate of a recognized test pilot school or equivalent on‑the‑job experience.
+ Data analysis experience using MATLAB, Python, or similar tools.
+ Civil aircraft certification experience, including:
+ ARP 4754 processes for requirements
+ FAA AC 23‑8C or AC 27‑1B for flight test
+ Experimental flight test experience, ideally including VTOL or STOVL and fly‑by‑wire.
+ Flight Analyst DER or ODA Unit Member.
+ Familiarity with FAA Order 4040.26C.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $176500.00 - $219870.00/yr.
Compensation at Joby is a combination of base pay and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The target base pay for this position is $176,500 - $219,870/yr. The compensation package will be determined by job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
