Field Service Technician (Electrical/Mechanical) – Secondary Packaging

Location: Buffalo Grove, IL (Service Office) — National Travel

Employment Type: 6‑Month Contract‑to‑Hire

Pay: $30–$35/hr (DOE; higher possible for the right candidate)

The Role

We’re seeking an experienced Field Service Technician to install, repair, and commission secondary packaging equipment (cartoners, case packers, box erectors, baggers, wrappers, form‑fill‑seal, etc.) at customer sites across the U.S. You’ll spend the majority of your time traveling to customer facilities, with non‑travel days spent at the Buffalo Grove, IL service office supporting technical troubleshooting and remote assistance.

Travel cadence: Typically 75% national travel in week‑long trips (fly out, work on‑site Mon–Fri, home Fridays/weekends). At peak periods, travel may rise to 90–100% depending on project demands.

What You’ll DoInstall, troubleshoot, and repair packaging machinery, including mechanical, electrical/electronic, PLC, servo motion, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems.Perform diagnostics and resolve faults for warranty and non‑warranty issues via on‑site service and remote support (video/email/phone).Train maintenance staff, technicians, and operators on equipment operation, changeovers, and preventive maintenance.Coordinate machine upgrades, special options, and service scopes with customers and internal teams.Maintain clear communication and ownership of issues until fully resolved; document work performed and parts used.Collaborate and knowledge‑share with other field technicians and cross‑functional engineering teams.Required Qualifications5+ years of field service/maintenance experience with packaging machinery (cartoners, case packers, palletizers, baggers, wrappers, form‑fill‑seal) strongly desired.Solid hands‑on in electro‑mechanical troubleshooting and repair.Proficiency reading mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, and using standard test/diagnostic tools.Practical experience with PLCs (troubleshooting/editing), servo motion systems, and machine controls.Excellent customer‑facing communication, documentation discipline, and a strong work ethic.Willingness and ability to travel nationally on short notice and for week‑long assignments.

Open to maintenance technicians from food/CPG packaging plants who are ready and willing to transition into a national travel field role.

Preferred/BonusAllen‑Bradley/Rockwell (ControlLogix/CompactLogix, Kinetix servo motion), Siemens (TIA Portal) experience.Bosch Rexroth/Indramat drives and servo systems.Experience with capital equipment programming, commissioning, and FAT/SAT.Technical degree/certification (Electro‑Mechanical, Industrial Maintenance, Mechatronics) is a plus.Work Location & ScheduleTravel (75% typical; up to 90–100% peak): Fly to customer sites nationwide; standard trips run Monday–Friday with return Friday or weekend.Non‑travel (25% typical): Work from the Buffalo Grove, IL service office supporting remote diagnostics and hands‑on shop troubleshooting.Job Type & Location

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $40.00/hr.
