Field Inspector - Structures Maintenance (General Construction Inspector I)

Position Summary

Incumbents of positions in this series inspect the construction of highways, buildings, bridges, dams, water or sewage systems, tunnels and waterways for conformance with plans and specifications; conduct tests on construction materials; survey construction sites; maintain records of construction operations; and perform related work as required. The basic purpose of this work is to oversee the construction practices used on various sites and to enforce compliance with plans, specifications and all applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities

Supervise and inspect construction projects, such as concrete and steel replacement, excavation and drainage, etc. for compliance with plans, specifications, and all applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.

Follow through inspections to ensure that necessary maintenance, repair and/or replacement procedures are undertaken.

Perform calculations and/or checks computations made by others for projects such as buildings or highway construction in order to plan, design and construct structures and facilities such as buildings, bridges, roads and drainage.

Test materials used in production of bituminous concrete pavement and cement concrete to ensure compliance with relevant standards.

Prepare all related documents, including but not limited to, daily reports, pay slips, sketches, etc., including data entry into computer programs.

Perform related work as required.

This position may be required to work nights/weekends based on project assignments.

This position is eligible for a five-thousand dollar ($5,000) signing bonus (“Signing Bonus”) if you are newly hired at MassDOT. Current MassDOT employees are not eligible for the Signing Bonus. The Signing Bonus will be paid in two parts: 1) $3,000 (less applicable taxes) included in the employee's first paycheck. 2) $2,000 (less applicable taxes) after the successful completion of the employee’s probationary period.

II. A Bachelor's or higher Degree with a major in civil engineering, civil engineering technology, architecture or structural, architectural or sanitary engineering may be substituted for the required experience.

Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicle Operator's License.
