JOB DESCRIPTION

 Advanced Practitioner Exercise Physiology 

"Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) is seeking to hire a full-time exercise physiologist whose primary role is to provide general and sport specific exercise training and fitness testing services for clients across the spectrum of age, fitness level, and medical and orthopedic conditions. Familiarity and experience with gait and movement mechanics analysis is a plus.

The successful candidate should be comfortable working in a collaborative, outpatient clinical setting, that includes other allied health practitioners such as physical and occupational therapists. The candidate will be expected to participate in community outreach initiatives, as well as having the opportunity to present at professional education conferences.

This is a unique opportunity for an individual with solid testing and training skills as well as superior customer service to join a growing program in a world-renowned academic medical center.

Performance metabolic testing skills and experience with athletes experience highly preferred."

Job Summary 

Provides general and sport specific exercise training and fitness testing services for clients across the spectrum of age, fitness level, and medical and orthopedic conditions. Evaluates clients and determines and provides customized and appropriate exercise prescription and sports specific fitness testing services as applicable. Works collaboratively with team members to ensure appropriate client programs. Participates in community outreach initiatives and presents professional education.  

Assists with the oversight of Performance team, including coordination of services, program development, educational activities, marketing and media relations. Provides effective clinical education for staff and students. 

 

Job Qualifications 

EDUCATION – Required 

Degree/Diploma Obtained                                          

Program of Study-Bachelors in Exercise Physiology or related field 

 

EDUCATION – Preferred 

Masters  in Exercise Physiology or related field                              

 

Certification Requirements 

Certifications from the ACSM (ACSM-EP preferred), NASM, ACE, or NSCA 

 

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURE - Preferred 

 

EXPERIENCE – Required 

2 years        

 

EXPERIENCE – Preferred 

4 years 

 

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS 

 

Continuously stand/walk or lift/handle/carry material or equipment of moderate weight (20 to 50 lbs). Examples: Nurses, LPNs, and Physical Therapists. 

 

 

ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS 

 

Located in an indoor area with frequent exposure to mild physical discomfort from dust, fumes, temperature, and noise. Examples: patient care providers and laboratory technicians. 

 

HAZARDS 

 

OSHA Category 1 

Tasks that involve exposure to blood, body fluids, tissues, and other potentially infectious materials. 

 

POSITION & UNIT ACCOUNTABILITIES  

Plans and implements exercise program as individualized for each client demonstrating competence in section specific techniques, as applicable. 

Organizes work for maximum efficiency. Maintains productivity per department expectations. Takes ownership of daily schedule to maintain effective patient treatment flow. Coordinates schedule with others as needed. 

Maintains and develops competence through required in-service and continuing educational programs.  Maintains CE credits as per professional affiliations. 

Participates in education of staff, community, and healthcare professionals (i.e. in-services and community/professional education). 

Documents progress patient has made toward desirable outcomes per departmental policies and guidelines. 

Is flexible with handling changes in the Section as they arise and accommodates unexpected or unplanned changes. 

Works with marketing and public relations to promote the Performance team initiatives through educational activities, public appearances/presentations, development of marketing materials, internet links, correspondence and liaison with organizations, individuals and media groups in a position to promote Sports Performance services.

Composes comprehensive reports of results of fitness assessments and home exercise programs, and reviews information with client to ensure understanding. 

Documents in accordance with departmental and regulatory requirement standards; accurately bills in a timely manner. 

Provides guidance to EP staff with managing patient caseload (scheduling conflicts, challenging patients, documentation) 

Assists with daily operations of the team 

Build relationships to expand referral network, internally 

Effective clinical instructor for staff, interns, volunteers, techs, coops

EDUCATION REQUIRED
A Master’s degree in Exercise Physiology or related field

NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist or ACSM (American College of Sports Medicine) Certification-CEP Clinical Exercise Physiologist; Adult BCLS for the Professional Rescuer
