Your New Role…

CNN Weather is seeking an experienced, digital-first editor to help guide and sharpen the team’s storytelling on evenings and weekends (Wednesday through Friday 12p-9p ET; Saturday and Sunday 8a-5p ET). The successful candidate has experience in the weather editorial space, including forecasts, and thrives in the breakneck pace of extreme weather. They also have strong news judgment and writing skills, and a familiarity with digital video best practices. This person is a strong collaborator who can work with meteorologists or highly specialized journalists, as well as breaking news reporters and correspondents around the world. They will help keep us sharp on daily priorities by ensuring weather editorial is clear, concise and engaging. Finally, this person must embody the team’s ethos — we are looking for a self-motivated, team-oriented colleague who takes pride in their work, values diversity and elevates their colleagues.

Your Role Accountabilities…

Help execute the coverage plan around the weather stories of the day, whether it’s a hurricane making landfall or a series of expert-led, short-format vertical videos

Pitch, assign, edit and occasionally write in formats that go beyond the traditional article, including real-time breaking news updates, video scripts, social media posts, TV package scripts, mobile-first projects and explanatory journalism

Work with the team to ensure the stories, updates, videos, graphics and social media posts we publish are accurate and fair

Work with visual designers and editors to enhance our storytelling

Occasionally assist the climate editors on daily and distinctive stories about the impact of the climate crisis and the race to transition from fossil fuel to renewable energy

Qualifications & Experience…

At least 5 years of digital reporting and editing experience, including fast-moving breaking news, in extreme weather, climate, science or a related space

A sharp POV on how to structure and frame weather-related content, particularly forecasts, for national audiences and local audiences

A passion for science and the natural world and a strong desire to find and tell these interesting stories to an audience

Exceptional communication skills within a newsroom – you should be able to communicate the value of your work internally as much as you can externally

Analytics experience to understand what makes audiences tick

At least a basic understanding of weather-related data and terminology, including which government agencies are responsible for certain forecasts

Ability and willingness to work outside regular hours during major weather events

A clear understanding of style and grammar

A college degree or equivalent

How We Get Things Done…

This last bit is probably the most important! Here at WBD, our guiding principles are the core values by which we operate and are central to how we get things done. You can find them at www.wbd.com/guiding-principles/ along with some insights from the team on what they mean and how they show up in their day to day. We hope they resonate with you and look forward to discussing them during your interview.
