We're seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to lead our Edge Platform team, a critical function that powers Nordstrom's digital customer experience through our edge infrastructure. In this role, you'll lead a team of engineers responsible for managing and evolving our edge computing platform, including CDN, Web Application Firewall (WAF), Bot Defense, Edge Compute, and API Gateway. You'll be responsible for both the technical direction and people leadership aspects of the team, ensuring high availability, performance, and security of our edge services while fostering a culture of innovation and operational excellence. This is a hands-on leadership role where you'll balance strategic thinking with tactical execution, partnering closely with application teams, security, and infrastructure partners to deliver scalable solutions that support Nordstrom's omnichannel retail operations. You'll drive the adoption of modern edge computing patterns, lead incident response and problem management efforts, and develop your team members' technical and professional capabilities. The ideal candidate brings deep technical expertise in edge technologies, proven people management skills, and the ability to translate complex technical concepts into business value for executive stakeholders.
A day in the life...
- Lead daily stand-ups and sprint planning sessions with your engineering team, removing blockers and ensuring alignment on priorities across Edge platforms - Review and approve architectural designs for new edge computing features, security policies, and API gateway configurations that impact customer-facing applications - Partner with application development teams to optimize content delivery strategies, implement bot mitigation rules, and design API management solutions - Monitor platform health dashboards, investigate performance anomalies, and coordinate incident response when edge services experience degradation - Conduct 1:1 meetings with team members to provide coaching, discuss career development goals, and address technical challenges they're facing - Collaborate with Product Management and Architecture teams to define the roadmap for edge platform capabilities, including serverless compute expansion and advanced security features - Participate in change advisory board meetings to review and approve production changes across edge infrastructure components - Analyze cost metrics and optimize resource utilization across edge deployments to maximize ROI while maintaining performance SLAs - Contribute to technical design reviews, code reviews, and infrastructure-as-code pull requests to maintain engineering standards - Facilitate post-incident reviews to drive continuous improvement in reliability and operational processes
You own this if you have...
- 7+ years of software engineering experience, or equivalent IT industry
- Bachelor's degree in computer engineering, computer science, or equivalent
- Hands-on experience with edge computing platforms (Cloudflare Workers, Lambda@Edge) - Experience with bot defense and fraud prevention - Knowledge of retail or e-commerce platforms and the unique edge requirements for high-traffic customer-facing applications - Experience with CI/CD pipelines for infrastructure deployment (GitHub Actions, Jenkins, GitLab CI) - Understanding of microservices architecture and service mesh technologies - Familiarity with container orchestration platforms (Kubernetes) and their integration with edge services - Experience with advanced security practices including OWASP Top 10, zero-trust architecture, and certificate management - Background in scripting and automation (Python, Go, JavaScript) for edge computing and API gateway customization - Knowledge of GraphQL and modern API design patterns - Experience with load testing, performance benchmarking, and capacity planning for edge infrastructure - Familiarity with compliance and regulatory requirements (PCI-DSS, SOC2, GDPR) as they relate to edge security - Previous experience in Agile/Scrum environments with strong understanding of sprint planning and backlog management - Track record of driving cost optimization initiatives while maintaining or improving service quality

$166,000.00 - $258,000.00 Annual
This position may be eligible for performance-based incentives/bonuses. Benefits include 401k, medical/vision/dental/life/disability insurance options, PTO accruals, Holidays, and more.
