This Traffic Safety Project Engineer (Engineer I level) position is assigned to the Safety Planning Group of the Traffic Safety Systems Section within the Traffic Safety Unit of the Transportation Mobility and Safety Division. The primary purpose of this position is to provide technical support, engineering expertise and investigative support for Transportation Improvement Program projects. This position will also assist with managing the Department’s Fatal Crash Review Program. This position requires an understanding of the technical aspects of traffic engineering principles, methods, techniques, and analytical highway safety skills in order to improve the Section’s expertise, efficiency, and production, while maintaining the high engineering standards required by the Department of Transportation. This position must have the basic knowledge, skill and ability of entry level traffic engineers, particularly those pertaining to engineering countermeasures for traffic safety studies, which includes preparing collision diagrams, intersection crash analyses, and strip analyses. This position requires good written and oral communication skills in order to handle the task of report writing, correspondence, personnel and public contact. The applicant must be passionate about the field of traffic safety and this position’s role in reducing the number of North Carolina traffic-related fatalities and injuries.
The variety of projects and vast amount of research in highway safety require professionals to stay abreast of the advancements in both methodologies and technologies used in analyzing safety projects. This requires the use of advanced data collection equipment, complex computer software applications and hardware. The applicant will be required to maintain a high level of knowledge concerning research in the fields of traffic safety, traffic engineering, data collection techniques and equipment and data analyses with an emphasis on traffic engineering and safety to complete traffic safety project reviews.

+ Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple projects simultaneously, develop work plans to accomplish goals and vision, and organize work effectively and efficiently with minimal supervision
Additional Expectations:
This position must have the basic knowledge, skill and ability of entry level traffic engineers, particularly those pertaining to engineering countermeasures for traffic studies, which includes preparing collision diagrams, intersection analyses, strip analyses, spatial analyses and high-hazard program development for statewide application. The ability to understand and explain contracts, interpret plans, provisions and specifications, interpret policies, procedures, regulations and laws; prepare contract specifications that are legally sound, train other employees and plan, coordinate and supervise work. This position requires good written and oral communication skills in order to handle the task of report writing, correspondence, personnel and public contact.

Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Qualification May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
