Overview

This position in the LG&E Gas Engineering Group, independently evaluates, selects, and applies standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria using judgment in identifying and implementing enhancements, adaptations, and modifications to existing and/or new equipment and systems.


Responsibilities

Engineer I

Identifies opportunities for improvement and/or suggests improved methods. Gathers, correlates, and analyzes specific data using established procedures.Performs detailed and/or routine engineering assignments involving established calculations, tests, and analysis. Performs a variety of routine tasks to become familiar with the engineering methods, practices, and programs of the company.Supports operating and maintenance functions with problem identification, engineering analysis, and problem resolution activities. Prepares and presents reports giving conclusions of job related engineering activities. Assists other engineers with large projects, as needed. Plans and controls all activities so as to provide an accident-free work place. Conducts work activities with regard to environmental rules and regulations. Regularly reviews assignments to assure optimum efficiency and cost effectiveness. Occasionally directs the activities of coops, supervisors, and others as they perform various activities. Performs other duties as assignedComplies with all policies and standards

Engineer II

Identifies opportunities for improvement and/or suggests improved methods.Performs engineering assignments associated with the design, construction, performance enhancement, cost effectiveness, operation, and maintenance of various plant equipment and systems.Coordinates activities of Engineer I, technicians, or others assigned to specific projects as necessary.Work assignments are varied and somewhat difficult.Performs assignments in which evaluation, originality, ingenuity, decision-making, and authority.Supports various plant operations and maintenance groups with engineering based problem troubleshooting, identification, analysis, and resolution.Assists Engineer III and/or Senior Engineers with large and/or complex projects, as required.Assists with the development of station/engineering goals, objectives, budgets, programs, and procedures.Plans and controls all activities so as to provide an accident-free work place.Conducts work activities with regard to environmental rules and regulations.Regularly reviews assignments to assure optimum efficiency and cost effectiveness.Directs the activities of coops, bargaining unit employees and others, as instructed, as they perform various activities including installation or checkout of new equipment, troubleshooting, testing, tuning, etc.Performs other duties as assignedComplies with all policies and standards

 

Engineer III

Supervises exempt, non-exempt and bargaining unit personnel under the Supervisory Engineer career path.Identifies opportunities for improvement and/or suggests improved methods.Plans and performs design, development and/or operating engineering assignments which could include responsibility for the engineering and construction of portions of a major project.Coordinates the labor force assigned to each activity.Coordinates activities of an assigned group with the various stages of an overall program.Engineering assignments are broad in nature and incumbent will have the latitude of and the responsibility for un-reviewed actions or decisions.In some instances, incumbent will temporarily supervise or be assisted by personnel from engineering, technician, and craft levels.Coordinates the activities of Engineer I and II, technician, and/or others assigned to specific projects, as necessary.Supports various plant operations and maintenance groups with engineering based troubleshooting, problem analysis, and resolution.Assists with the development of station/engineering goals, objectives, budgets, programs, and procedures.Plans and controls all activities so as to provide an accident-free work place.Conducts work activities with regard to environmental rules and regulations.Regularly reviews assignments to assure optimum efficiency and cost effectiveness.Directs the activities of cooperative interns, bargaining unit employees and others, as instructed, as they perform various activities including installation or checkout of new equipment, troubleshooting, testing, tuning, etc.Performs other duties as assignedComplies with all policies and standards

Principal Engineer

Develops techniques and methods for addressing highly complex engineering issuesProvides counsel to department’s internal and external customers in matters relating to engineeringConsults with management in matters considered vital to the strategic success of the companyRepresents the company in various regulatory and legal proceedings as requiredDirects the work activities of other engineers and engineering & design analystsProvides employee development opportunities through periodic job performance reviews and progress assessments and a wide variety of assignmentsProvides technical direction to engineers, operating personnel, and maintenance personnel based on extensive acquired knowledgeDirects the activities of engineers, technicians, supervisors and/or others assigned to specific projects or work groups as necessaryAssignments are broad in nature and of critical importance to the company and/or its customers; individual will have the latitude of responsibility for un-reviewed actions or decisionsConsults with management in the development of departmental goals, objectives, budgets, programs, and proceduresDirects and/or reviews the development of management analyses and business impact studies associated with departmental business and technical initiatives;  Advises departmental management on highly specialized subjectsProvides technical leadership for large project development and implementation;  Works closely with less skilled individuals to promote/exchange knowledgePresents to management in a professional manner, ideas, technologies, and business case analysis necessary when making financial/business decisionsParticipates in professional, industry, and/or civic organizations to maintain and enhance expertise actively seeking, researching, and recommending new and innovative applications of technologyDevelops and leads continuous improvement initiatives within the line of businessPlans and controls activities so as to provide an accident-free work placeConducts work activities with regard to environmental rules and regulationsPerforms other duties as assignedComplies with all policies and standards

 


Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

 

Engineer I

ABET Accredited Bachelor’s degree in engineering or engineering technology

 

Engineer II

ABET Accredited Bachelor’s degree in engineering or engineering technology2+ years in engineering. Utility system operator experience will be counted as engineering experience for this position.  

Engineer III

ABET Accredited Bachelor’s degree in engineering or engineering technology 5+ years of engineering experience, or a master’s degree in engineering plus 3 years of engineering experience, or a PhD in Engineering plus 2 years of engineering experience. Utility system operator experience will be counted as engineering experience for this position. 

 

Principal Engineer

ABET Accredited Bachelor’s degree in engineering or engineering technology 10+ years of engineering experience, or a master’s degree in engineering plus 8 years of engineering experience, or a PhD in Engineering plus 7 years of engineering experience. Utility system operator experience will be counted as engineering experience for this position. Ability to analyze and solve engineering problems from a business perspective.

 

Preferred Qualifications

Ability to analyze and solve engineering problems from a business perspective.Ability to use formal engineering training in practical application to assignments.

 

 

Work Conditions

Equally balanced between an office environment and field work.  The field work requires frequent walking and climbing
