The Director of Communications will be a key leader in the development of the communications and public relations strategy for a publicly traded, Fortune 200 global company. The Director will promote and protect the Couche-Tard and Circle K brands and reputations as among the world’s preferred destinations for convenience and mobility, telling the company’s story on its performance, growth, leadership, innovations, culture, and impact across key markets.
In particular, the Director will lead U.S. media and public relations, as well as crisis communications and issues management, ensuring clear, authentic messaging on key themes, strategies, leadership and company news and trends to showcase the business. The Director will also be responsible for communication and PR leadership for the U.S. operations and business units as well as working with Global functions on their internal and external communication needs. The Director will be flexible and ready to jump in to collaborate with team members across divisions to promote key global and local initiatives, identify trends and seize news-making opportunities that drive the ACT narrative to all stakeholders.
The position will be located in our Charlotte, North Carolina, service center.
Job Responsibilities
Oversee U.S. media relations and public relations for Circle K, including the development and execution of earned media strategies, managing day-to-day inbound inquiries from U.S. consumer, business, trade and local media. Ensure all media relations/PR activities are well aligned with broader business communications strategies and initiatives.Provide ongoing strategic counsel and support to U.S. Operations business units on local earned media opportunities, community initiatives, and issues and incident response.Collaborate with Marketing on U.S. Consumer PR campaigns, and plan and implement internal and external communications supporting other Global Functions (e.g., Food, Merchandising, Fuel, Finance, Real Estate, Franchise, Digital and Global Tech).Write/develop and edit press releases, fact sheets, backgrounders, FAQs, media holding statements, presentations, video scripts, blog pieces, website and social media copy among other content.Maintain a deep understanding of the external environment, current events and emerging topics and issues, particularly in the U.S., with the potential to generate public/stakeholder interest and affect the organization’s reputation.Work with cross-functional teams to develop, maintain and update crisis communications plans and materials. Be flexible to work on different global communications and PR initiatives as they arise, such as executive, financial and organizational communications.Manage relationships with U.S. public relations agencies.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in English, Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or related field, or equivalent professional experienceAt least 8-10 years of experience in media relations and corporate communications (in-house or agency), preferably for a major retail, fuel, foodservice or similar organization serving a wide geographic area with a large front-line workforce.Strategic thinker with proven experience developing and implementing successful communications programs that build influence, trust, engagement and support with key external and internal stakeholders.Demonstrated success working with local and top-tier national media.Exceptional verbal and written communications skills with extensive experience writing, editing and developing content across a wide range of traditional, digital and visual platforms.Proficiency in crisis communications and issues management.Experience representing an organization as an official spokesperson.Experience working with executive leadership and handling confidential information.Proven ability to work under tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.Capacity to handle multiple assignments concurrently and collaborate with leaders and colleagues across multiple geographies and divisions.Willing to travel up to 15% of the time for business purposes.French language skills a plus
