Director, Program Management, NA Surface Transportation

The Director, Safety & Compliance, defines and executes the safety and compliance initiatives across the North America Surface Transportation (NAST) network. Our ideal candidate is passionate about safety and compliance and possesses a strong project management background. They will have experience developing and implementing safety management systems and work-process simplification. The primary responsibility of this position is to lead the successful implementation of a comprehensive strategy to enable compliant and safe driving for the NAST network. Experience on navigating across a highly regulated industry is critical. The expertise encompasses various areas, including regulations, compliance, safety standards, and the overall commercial motor vehicle industry. This leader needs to maintain agility and flexibility to ensure programs are put in place and adopted by Operations and safety teams to ensure we are always doing what is right for the safety of our associates, contractors, and anyone coming onto our sites or operating our equipment. We are seeking a seasoned leader with a demonstrated track record of effectively managing and developing diverse teams, including both salaried and hourly employees. The ideal candidate will possess a keen ability to analyze complex issues, problem-solve, and lead through influence, fostering change across all organizational levels. This leader must be curious, adaptable, and committed to continuous learning, with a passion for optimizing operations and transportation processes through the strategic application of technology. The successful individual will excel at balancing hands-on involvement in addressing specific challenges while also maintaining a strategic, big-picture perspective to guide the organization towards greater efficiency and success. This position requires a results-oriented, high-energy, dynamic individual with both stamina and mental quickness to be able to work and thrive in a fast-paced operations environment. Excellent communication skills with all levels of management and staff will be imperative. Key job responsibilities • Create and implement the short and long-term roadmap for NAST Safety and Compliance team • Ability to build trust and confidence with the Operations and World-Wide safety teams and other stakeholders; influencing change through comprehensive risk assessments and safety data analysis. • Develop and implement process standards across all modes of middle mile transportation to establish a standard platform on which we build technologies for the future network • Create global relationships to ensure worldwide alignment on process best practice, planning and utilization of lessons learned • Develop inputs to and implement related technology projects. Lead the scoping, assist with design and lead the implementation of technology projects. • Skills and process training for the team to include new and existing NA leaders • Audit internal work on process standards, leading to action planning and execution of improvement activity. • Independently manage a portfolio of large complex projects and programs from concept through to pilot and full implementation • Develop and nurture, whilst providing leadership and expertise to a team of SMEs and BI-Analysts • Be the architect and gatekeeper of the Amazon’s Surface transportation Compliance and safety metrics • Present performance metrics and long-term plans regularly to VP leadership teams • Create an environment of innovation and continuous improvement within the team by embracing new technology and ideas Basic Qualifications - Bachelor Degree in a management, EHS, business, engineering, or logistics-based discipline - 5+ years of Amazon experience - 5+ years of relevant experience in safety, compliance, and/or regulatory affairs, including experience developing and implementing safety strategies and programs - 5+ years demonstrated strong track record of team leadership or technical roles within a large scale, rapid and process-driven environment, in an Operations, Risk & Compliance, Safety, Supply Chain, Manufacturing, Transportation or Engineering function - Ability to travel 25-50% of the time Preferred Qualifications - Masters or MBA preferred - If Amazonian, experience in managing middle mile transportation network - Deep familiarity with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations - Six Sigma Green or Operational Black Belts welcome - 8+ years demonstrated strong track record of team leadership or technical roles within a large scale, rapid and process driven environment, in an Operations, Risk & Compliance, Safety, Supply Chain, Manufacturing, Transportation or Engineering function - Experience influencing cross-functional teams to deliver a network-wide change agenda across multiple countries - A strong analytical approach to problem-solving with a metrics-driven focus on frugality, without sacrificing safety or customer satisfaction - The ability to demonstrably overcome adversity; drives change by influencing others to achieve results. The base pay for this position ranges from $181,600/year in our lowest geographic market up to $270,300/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
