What is the opportunity?
Reporting to the Senior Director, Product, Plans, and Pricing, the Director, Product Taxation, Savings & Investments will support the oversight and execution of the RBC’s Personal Bank Savings & Investments product tax strategy, ensuring compliance with evolving legislative requirements and regulatory standards as applicable to both deposit taking financial institutions and Mutual Fund Dealers (Royal Mutual Funds Inc - RMFI). This role is responsible for monitoring legislative changes, overseeing the timely implementation of tax updates, managing critical tax tools and systems, and acting as a control owner for key tax processes. The incumbent also serves as the primary point of contact for complex tax-related matters, collaborating closely with the Tax Advisory Group (TAG) and external tax authorities to resolve issues and provide expert guidance. The role helps foster a culture of compliance, accountability, and operational excellence across Savings & Investments, partnering with stakeholders across the business to support strategic objectives and mitigate risk.
What will you do?
Supporting the identification and implementation of changes to Canadian product tax reporting legislation impacting Savings & Investments (S&I), and leading assigned compliance initiatives to ensure effective adherence.
Acting as a primary point of contact for complex or unusual tax-related issues, including coordination with the Tax Advisory Group (TAG) and external tax authorities such as CRA and Revenue Québec.
Managing ongoing dialogue and collaboration between product teams, Operations, Technology, and business leaders to evaluate the impact of tax changes and drive timely, compliant solutions.
Overseeing the end-to-end implementation of legislative changes, including presenting recommendations to business leaders to obtain decisions and required funding.
Coordinating the planning and execution of annual tax season activities across impacted stakeholder groups to ensure operational readiness and compliance.
Managing relationships with tax-related vendors and serving as the sign-off authority for the release of tax slips to clients and tax authorities, including annual and monthly amendments.
Monitoring the effectiveness of tax-related controls within the operational ecosystem, including oversight of controls owned by other functions but reported to the Tax Director.
Supporting the identification of emerging tax risks and working with control owners across S&I to maintain a robust and effective control environment.
Promoting accountability, compliance, and transparency in the application of tax governance standards across the S&I business.
Act as Control Owner and ensure Product related tax controls and documentation are appropriately designed, implemented, and operating effectively to mitigate relevant tax risks.
What do you need to succeed?
Must have:
Minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in tax advisory, compliance, and planning, with at least 3 years in a leadership or management role.
Proven track record in managing complex tax matters for large organizations, preferably within a public accounting firm or corporate tax department.
Extensive experience with federal, state, and international tax regulations and reporting requirements
Undergraduate degree.
CPA or equivalent
Nice to have:
Previous experience in a financial institution or public accounting firm is strongly desired.
Experience with mutual fund expectations would be an asset.
Completion of CICA In Depth Tax Course
