Job Description
A Glimpse of the Job
The Deputy Commandant and Chief of Staff, under general direction, acts as second in Command of the Corps of Cadets. The position supervises staff and operations of the Office of the Commandant and other Corps functions. They facilitate the more significant cadet discipline cases and work to increase retention and lead special projects as directed by the Commandant.
Essential Duties/Tasks
Second in command of Corps of Cadets
+ Assist Commandant is determining work priorities and assigns work accordingly
+ Embraces an environment of openness and respect among staff
+ Ensures that staff are afforded the opportunity to develop and grow
+ Promotes an environment that is respectful of others and promotes honest feedback and coaching of employees
+ Ensures that staff are properly trained to be successful
+ Ensures employees are appropriately evaluated and position descriptions are current
Lead Cadet Discipline System
+ Provide guidance over the more significant cadet disciplinary cases in conjunction with the University Community Standards office
Special Projects and Other
+ Manage the larger cadet operations such as College Station march in, Mardi Gras parades, and O-week
+ Advises the Commandant on issues affecting the Corps of Cadets especially leadership development within the corps
+ Promotes through speeches, orientations, and briefings, the Texas A&M University System (TAMUS), University, Corps of Cadets, and ROTC programs to high schools, parents, prospective students, on campus clubs, and other organizations.
+ Performs other duties as required across the campus

Salary: $110,000 annually

Required Education and Experience
+ Bachelor’s degree in applicable field and professional military education commensurate with Field Grade Officer, a maritime license or equivalent combination of education and experience
+ Ten years commissioned, active military service or comparable time in the maritime industry as a licensed mariner or working with cadets in a military or maritime academy
Required Licenses and Certifications
+ Must be able to secure a TWIC card including firefighting, basic lifesaving, and other certifications to be able to sail on the summer sea term as part of the maritime program
+ State of Texas class "C" vehicle driver license or the ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.
Preferred Qualifications
+ Master’s degree in related program

+ Excellent communication and presentation skills
+ Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
+ Working knowledge of office software and instructional programs
+ Knowledge of principles and methods for teaching and instructing individuals and groups
+ Skilled in utilizing various learning and active listening strategies
+ Ability to orally comprehend and express information and use inductive and deductive reasoning
+ Ability to facilitate and adapt course and the course content
+ Ability to positively and professionally interact with clients and staff, groups of various sizes
+ Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others
Additional Information
Machines or equipment used in the performance of essential duties
+ Drive a 15 passenger van
+ Personal computer and office software (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite)
Physical Requirements
+ Able to live on board a ship for 75 days
+ Ability to work outdoors exposed to various weather conditions, potential allergens, elevated noise levels, and heat
+ Ability to move up to 30 lbs with assistance
+ Ability to move light, medium or heavy objects with assistance.
+ Ability to travel independently to other and/or remote locations by driving and/or flying on commercial airlines
Other Requirements and Factors
+ This position is security sensitive.
+ This position requires compliance with state and federal laws/codes and Texas A&M University System/TAMU policies, regulations, rules and procedures
+ All tasks and job responsibilities must be performed safely without injury to self or others in compliance with System and University safety requirements
+ This position may require up to 15% or more travel for summer sea term
+ This position may require work beyond normal office hours and/or work on weekends
+ This position may direct and/or evaluate the work of others
