The Deckhand is responsible for assisting sea vessel operations transporting crew members, passengers and freight
Responsibilities
This position description is subject to change at any time as needed to meet the requirements of the program or company.
+ Assists in standing lookout watch in traffic areas under all weather and sea conditions
+ Assists in the daily inspection of the operating condition of all emergency equipment
+ Attends to passenger needs and performs cleanup and maintenance duties
+ Provides good customer service to the travelling public
+ Participates in periodic all hands drills and emergency exercises
+ Operates safety gates and loading ramps, and maintains security about the decks
+ Reads all gauges and fluid levels in engine room and reports any problems to the captain
+ Reports all observations, actions and/or matters affecting the stability, operational capacity, safety and welfare of the vessel, crew, passengers, vehicles and other public properties to the captain or first deckhand
+ Handles lines, tie up barges in fleets or to docks
+ Make and break tow using all necessary equipment
+ Ensures applicable industry safety standards, guidelines and specification codes are observed
+ Conducts onboard maintenance, repairs, and regular onboard inspections to include machinery and equipment
+ Maintains and ensures the quality control of the motor vessel’s Preventive Maintenance System
+ Conducts on-site surveys of vessel equipment to determine maintenance and repair needs
+ Performs other job duties as assigned
Qualifications
+ Minimum Qualifications: Education/Certifications: One year related experience may be substituted for one year of education, if degree is required.
+ High School Diploma
+ Preferred Experience
+ Working knowledge of methods and procedures used in the maintenance and repair of marine equipment, machinery, facilities and boats
+ Skills
+ Good communication and customer service skills
+ Working Conditions:
+ Must be capable of working in an extreme weather conditions with temperatures exceeding 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
+ Indoor and/or outdoor environment with very adverse and harsh conditions (i.e., hot, wet, tropical environment with average temperatures of 130 degrees in the summer months).
+ Includes some industrial production environment conditions as well.
+ The worker is subject to both environmental conditions. Activities occur inside and outside.
+ The worker is subject to noise. There is sufficient noise to cause the worker to shout in order to be heard above ambient noise level
+ The worker is subject to vibration. Exposure to oscillating movements of the extremities or whole body.
+ The worker is subject to hazards. Includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to high heat or exposure to chemicals
+ Physical Requirements:
+ Medium work. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
+ Work may require heavy lifting, stooping, climbing, prolonged standing, prolonged sitting, and working with or in areas where a potential could exist for exposure to physical, chemical, or biological agents.
+ Employee use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is required for some situations. PPE includes, but is not limited to, head, foot, torso, respiratory, vision, and hearing protective devices.
+ Must comply with all Fire and Safety Regulations and post policies.
