DATABASE ADMINISTRATOR SENIOR

As a Database Administrator Senior, the work you’ll do at GDIT will be impactful to support the New York State (NYS) Department of Heath Medicaid Management Information System (MMIS) program.


You’ll join our talented Architecture Team with oversight of the information architecture. You will play a crucial role in the planning strategic direction and define the guiding principles that shape our software, data and technology adoption practices. Will be a part of the DBA team supporting the NYS MMIS. You will be responsible for the maintenance and support of multiple high volume multi-terabyte DB2 LUW, PostgreSQL, MongoDB and DB2 z/OS databases. You will work with the development team to understand requirements and create structures to accommodate them. Also responsible for trouble shooting and database and SQL performance tuning.  

WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO SUCCEED:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field preferredRequired Experience: The position requires 3+ years of database experience in a distributed environment; Mainframe and Open Systems are required.Required Technical Skills:Strong SQL proficiency and hands-on database administration experiencePerformance tuning and optimization (indexing strategy, query tuning, execution plan analysis)Database backup and recovery design and executionHigh availability and disaster recovery (HA/DR) configuration and supportMonitoring, alerting, and capacity planning for production databasesScripting for automation (SQL, Bash, or Python)DB2 (LUW) administration experience, including:DB2 HADR configuration and managementTablespace, buffer pool, and storage optimizationBackup/restore operations using db2backup/db2restorePerformance troubleshooting via db2pd, snapshot monitors, db2explRequired Skills and Abilities:Ability to design, implement, and maintain secure database environmentsUnderstanding of RBAC, least-privilege access, and secure authentication practicesExperience with patching, vulnerability remediation, and secure configuration baselinesStrong analytical and troubleshooting skills, including root-cause analysisAbility to create clear documentation and operational runbooksAbility to collaborate effectively with developers, DevOps/SRE, and security teamsAbility to work effectively in fast-paced environments and participate in on-call rotationsStrong ownership mindset and commitment to database reliability and performanceExperience in a high-volume mission critical environment with strict performance Service Levels Preferred Skills:Experience with monitoring and observability platforms (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK/EFK)Airflow or other workflow orchestration tools (e.g., Prefect, Dagster)Advanced database security practices:Audit logging, database activity monitoringData masking, tokenization, field-level encryptionKey management (KMS/HSM), certificate rotationUnderstanding of compliance frameworks (HIPAA, NIST800)Experience with event streaming and CDCExposure to DB2 pureScale or advanced clustering architecturesAdvanced MongoDB experience (sharding, advanced performance tuning)MongoDB administrative experience, including replica sets, indexing, query tuning, basic security configuration, and backup/restoreManaging database disaster recoveryExperience with healthcare claims processing desirable

The likely salary range for this position is $106,250 - $143,750. This is not, however, a guarantee of compensation or salary. Rather, salary will be set based on experience, geographic location and possibly contractual requirements and could fall outside of this range.
