Data Harmonization Specialist Expert
**Job Title:** Data Harmonization Specialist / Expert **(Remote)** **Location:** Fully Remote **but** candidates must be based in **Seattle, Boston, Philadelphia, or San Francisco** **Pay range: $78hr-$85hr** **Schedule:** Monday – Friday | 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM **Type:** Full-Time | Contract (Backfill) **Experience:** 5+ years **Industry:** Life Sciences / Bioinformatics **About the Role** We are seeking a **Scientific Knowledge Engineer / Data Harmonization Specialist** with strong project management experience to join a dynamic **product organization** . This role sits at the intersection of science, data, and business—translating complex biological data needs into actionable, structured, and standardized data models. You’ll be responsible for defining schemas and metadata, leading data harmonization efforts, and managing stakeholder requirements in an agile environment. A background in bioinformatics or life sciences is highly valuable, and experience working closely with business users is key. **Key Responsibilities** + Lead **data harmonization** efforts for biological and clinical datasets using established standards and ontologies. + Define and maintain schemas, controlled vocabularies, and ontologies for biological/scientific data. + Translate complex biological use cases and user requirements into structured, usable data and metadata models. + Manage project activities within the product organization, including Agile ceremonies, backlog grooming, and stakeholder reporting. + Work closely with business stakeholders to capture, interpret, and document requirements. + Collaborate with external groups to align internal data standards with academic and industry ontologies. + Ensure all data is FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) and meets platform ingestion standards. **Day-to-Day Activities** + Sit with business stakeholders to understand user requirements and system needs + Document technical and functional requirements in Agile documentation tools + Work with data engineering to validate mapping specifications and schema development + Support data ingestion pipelines and ensure metadata is appropriately structured for integration + Manage project scope, deliverables, and reporting in coordination with product and engineering leads **Must-Have Qualifications** + Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Bioinformatics, Computer Science, or related field + 5+ years of experience in data harmonization, semantic technologies, or scientific data integration + Experience in **project management within Agile product teams** + Strong communication skills to interact with scientists, data engineers, and business stakeholders + Proven experience with: + **Data Harmonization & Analysis:** Jupyter Notebooks, Python, SQL, regular expressions, spreadsheet wizardry + **Bioinformatics & Scientific Data:** GEO, single-cell data, ArrayExpress, EGA, CellxGene, NGS workflows + **Semantic Technologies & Ontologies:** LinkML, OWL, Protégé, SPARQL, RDF, knowledge of DOID, UBERON, CL, NCBITaxon + **Pipelines & Platforms:** NextFlow, GitHub, cloud environments (Google Cloud – nice to have), anndata format **Nice-to-Have Experience** + Familiarity with BioPortal, OLS, and public biomedical ontologies + Prior biology or research experience, especially with Next Gen Sequencing + Experience working in regulated life sciences or pharmaceutical environments + GraphQL or knowledge graph development **Who Thrives in This Role?** + An individual who can confidently navigate both scientific data and product development lifecycles + A cross-functional communicator who bridges biology, business, and technology + Detail-oriented with the ability to model complex data relationships clearly + Comfortable working autonomously in a remote setting across multiple time zones **Why Join Us?** This is a unique opportunity to shape the foundation of scientific data products used for drug and vaccine discovery.
