Job Summary

Under general supervision, performs a variety of custodial duties to maintain the cleanliness and orderliness of assigned rooms, common areas, buildings and related University facilities.

Responsibilities*Characteristic and Related DutiesRecord and communicate level of attendance to supervisorCommunicate need for additional staffingCheck inventory of other employees and requisition needed suppliesCommunicate written or verbal instructions from supervision to other employeesCoordinate the work of assigned assistantsOperate and maintain mechanical cleaning equipmentOperate and maintain carpet shampooing and upholstery cleaning equipmentStrip and wax floor surfacesMaintain entrances by performing such duties as hand shoveling snow, ice removalClean grounds and area by performing such duties as picking up paper or trash around buildingsOperate and maintain vacuum cleaning equipment.Clean and wax furniture, cases, fixtures, and furnishingsClean mirrors, interior, and exterior glassUnplug commodes, urinals, and sink drains without dismantling the fixtureClean toilet rooms and fixturesStock restroom suppliesClean ventsDust window blindsSpot wash wallsWipe tabletops as neededCollect and dispose of waste materialsReport items for repair; issue service ordersSweep, dust and wet mop floors and stairwaysMaintain an inventory of supplies in accordance with specific instructionsTurn on or off lights and equipment; Charge equipment as neededMove and arrange furniture or furnishings for cleaning purposes only
 Required Qualifications*High school diploma or equivalentExperience in operating and maintaining institutional type custodial equipment (ex: carpet extractors, riding and/or walk behind scrubbers)Experience leading and training custodial workforceAbility to read, interpret and utilize a Safety Data Sheet (SDS)Experience with safely mixing and utilizing chemicalsComputer proficiency is required including Microsoft, Outlook, Google Workspace and the ability to put in and retrieve work orders
 Desired Qualifications*Two years of full-time custodial experience in institutional facilitiesWork Schedule

This is an onsite 2nd shift position.

Hours are 3:00 pm - 11:30pm, Tuesday - Saturday

Modes of Work

Onsite
The work requires, or the supervisor approves a fully onsite presence.  Onsite is defined as a designated U-M owned or leased work location within or outside of the State of Michigan.

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the AFSCME union, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
