Controls Engineer
Controls/Electrical Engineer (Entry Level) Summary You will contribute across three core areas—Troubleshooting, Electrical Design, and Software Design—for industrial automation equipment. The ideal candidate combines solid electrical fundamentals with a practical, hands‑on mindset and clear communication skills. Troubleshooting + Apply fundamentals of electricity (measurement & analysis) to isolate wiring/component issues and recommend corrective actions. + Fully adhere to Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) requirements. + Investigate issues methodically, select a course of action based on probability/impact, and leverage prior experience to filter solutions. + Manage time effectively; seek peer input before progress stalls. + Implement permanent fixes that leave equipment and documentation professional and complete. + Accurately capture redlines and follow update/release procedures. + Translate technical findings into clear, non‑technical explanations for cross‑functional teammates. Electrical Design + Work with national/international standards (e.g., NFPA 79, NFPA 70E, UL 508A). + Use AutoCAD Electrical to maintain drawings, libraries, symbol sets, and parts databases. + Use EPLAN to maintain schematics, symbol libraries, and parts databases. + Identify and reuse relevant intellectual property across projects. + Read and navigate mechanical layouts in AutoCAD and SolidWorks. + Contribute to Safety Risk Assessments; select and verify safety functions to required performance levels (e.g., via SISTEMA). + Produce engineering documentation supporting SCCR (Short‑Circuit Current Rating) calculations. + Design and document feeder and branch circuits in accordance with UL requirements. + Architect industrial networks in line with guidance from their governing organizations (e.g., Ethernet/IP, PROFINET, etc.). + Tailor electrical designs to meet performance targets while balancing contractual constraints with internal standards. + Engineer for environmental and site conditions (ambient heat, ingress protection, factory voltages). + Stay current with the hardware/software being deployed; implement technology to its fullest capability. + Support Applications/Proposals with control‑design concepts and estimate inputs. + Research, select, and apply sensors, communication technologies, and control devices for motion/position/pressure and data exchange. Software Design (PLC/HMI/Motion) + Clarify end‑user expectations up front; let those drive design decisions during implementation. + Configure local/remote I/O and verify update rates meet process demands. + Partner with Mechanical Engineering on sensor selection/placement to ensure reliable signals. + Engineer inter‑machine interfaces and coordinate signaling with external systems. + Program automated machine sequences per contract scope. + Validate that each step meets expected conditions; add logic for off‑nominal states and clear, actionable alarms. + Implement interlocks that prevent self‑damage or unsafe operation. + Write fault‑tolerant and recoverable data transactions. + Consider failure modes and encode appropriate responses/alarms. + Ensure safety‑related control systems achieve required Performance Levels. + Document code intent and architecture; produce UIs/HMIs that are easy to read and navigate. + Aim for minimal rework; use iterative development where appropriate. + Simplify complex operations through thoughtful organization and strategy.
