Job Title: Controller

Job Description

We are seeking an experienced and proactive Controller to lead and manage our financial operations. This role involves maintaining cash flow forecasts, overseeing accounts receivable and payable, and ensuring the accuracy of financial statements. You will play a critical role in strategic planning for accounting systems, banking relationships, and tax strategy.

Responsibilities

Maintain and update cash flow forecasts and monitor accounts to ensure healthy financial operations.Oversee job costing activities, including expense validation, monthly closeouts, and profit/loss reporting to leadership.Conduct month-end reviews to identify and resolve discrepancies, ensuring accurate financial statements.Manage multi-state sales tax filings using Avalara and coordinate federal and state business tax filings with external advisors.Assist external accountants with year-end tax preparation and reporting.Prepare semi-annual financial reports for subcontracted U.S. government contracts.Document and implement internal policies, procedures, and controls to support company growth.Identify and execute process improvements, including enhancements to accounting software.Provide backup support for bookkeeping and purchasing during peak periods or team absences.Take on additional tasks and special projects as needed to support the finance team and broader business goals.

Essential Skills

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.At least 10 years of hands-on experience in accounting, with a strong experience in forecasting and job costing.Advanced knowledge of QuickBooks Online (QBO).Solid understanding of core accounting functions, including reconciliations, general ledger, A/P, A/R, income tax, and sales & use tax.Proficient in Microsoft Office, especially Excel.Strong grasp of U.S. GAAP.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

CPA certification is a plus.Experience transitioning from QuickBooks to another accounting platform is a strong advantage.Familiarity with job costing in industries like construction, contracting, or similar project-based environments.Comfortable negotiating service agreements (e.g., equipment rentals, travel accommodations).Skilled in analyzing financial data, preparing reports, and creating projections.Experience working in fast-paced, high-growth environments—especially startups or expanding business units—is highly valued.Able to work independently and collaborate effectively within a team.Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple priorities.Naturally curious and thoughtful, with a drive to improve processes and contribute meaningfully.

Work Environment

This role requires working in the office five days a week within an upbeat and positive environment. The Accounting and Finance department consists of six people. The company fosters a collaborative atmosphere with monthly activities and a 'work hard, play hard' culture, including pickleball every Wednesday.

Job Type & Location

This is a Permanent position based out of Columbia, Maryland.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $100000.00 - $120000.00/yr.
