Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Controller to join our architecture firm and oversee all aspects of financial management. This role involves financial compliance, corporate accounting, strategic and operational budgeting, financial reporting, and the development of internal control policies and procedures for the Accounting Department. As a key business partner, the Controller ensures our creative teams have the financial insights and systems needed to deliver impactful, mission-aligned design work. The ideal candidate will bring a strong background in financial leadership and team development, preferably within a professional service or creative industry.

ResponsibilitiesSupport the COO and the firm’s Officers with strategic planning and decision-making.Develop, manage, and monitor firm-wide project budgets and forecasts, preparing analyses and financial insights for leadership and project stakeholders.Guide knowledge of Company Policies, Procedures, Processes, and Internal Controls for effective decision-making.Translate financial information to non-financial leaders effectively.Champion financial literacy within the organization at both ESOP and Project Levels.Work with the Treasurer to report on the financial aspects of the company to the Board.Collaborate with the Director of People Operations on compensation budgets.Manage cash flow, bank reconciliations, and ensure optimal financial health of the firm.Ensure accuracy and integrity of financial records by managing all core accounting functions, including general ledger, accounts receivable/payable, payroll, revenue recognition, and project accounting.Prepare financial statements, including Balance Sheet, Income Statement, and Cash Flow Statement, to ensure accurate, timely, and relevant information is available for management.Coordinate external audits, tax filings, and ensure compliance with regulatory and legal requirements.Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual processes and ensure the timely delivery of financial statements.Work closely with project leaders to track project performance, project budgets, vendor requirements, and profitability.Maintain, strengthen, and create internal controls, policies, and procedures.Evaluate and enhance accounting systems and software, including VantagePoint.Mentor and manage accounting staff to foster professional development and team efficiency.Supervise staff, including assignments and job performance reviews.Champion the accounting team and ensure their work is recognized.Essential SkillsMaster's degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA, CMA, or MBA preferred.Proven experience as a Controller or in a similar role.10+ years of experience in financial leadership, ideally in an architecture or consulting firm.Solid understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and professional services accounting.Experience with general ledger functions and the month-end/year-end close process.Excellent accounting software user and administration skills.Experience integrating or transitioning to financial and project-based software systems.Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.Experience working collaboratively with creative teams while upholding financial best practices.Experience developing an accounting/finance team.Additional Skills & QualificationsAEC background preferred; if not, must understand project work and be a culture fit.


Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $120000.00 - $150000.00/yr.
