The employer is a respected organization within the not-for-profit industry, known for its commitment to advancing civil liberties and justice. This role will join a Project Team focused on immigrant detention. Ideally this role will be local to Washington, D.C. or San Francisco, CA.

Job DescriptionLitigate in federal and state courts, including appellate courts, throughout the country.Carry a substantial caseload in federal and state court, working closely with other staff attorneys and local counsel.Support litigation efforts, including drafting legal documents, conducting research, and preparing case strategies.Provide legal advice and guidance in alignment with the organization's mission and goals.Collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders to address legal challenges.Ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations in all legal matters.Conduct policy advocacy on prisoners' rights and criminal justice issues.Develop new cases, identify and work with potential plaintiffs and witnesses.Engage in public speaking to a variety of audiences on a broad range of prisoners' rights, criminal justice, and civil liberties issuesTravel as required for litigation, case management, conferences, and client development.Represent the organization in legal proceedings and negotiations as needed.Maintain detailed and organized case files and documentation.

The Successful Applicant

A successful Contract Staff Attorney should have:

A J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited law school.Demonstrated litigation experience, specifically with immigrants rights and civil rights law.Fluency in Spanish is preferred.Admission to US State bar, in good standing.Ideally local to Washington D.C. or San Francisco, CA.Strong ability to work independently and within a team environment.Proven ability to contribute to a collaborative and inclusive workplace culture.
