Computer Operator II - Night Shift

**Position Overview**
This IT support position spans several critical operational areas, including:
• IT Operations
• 24/7 Command Center & NOC
• Enterprise Monitoring
• Job Scheduling
• Data Center Management
• Major Incident Management
The position involves monitoring physical computer rooms, servers, databases, applications, and related processes. It also provides first-level support and escalation, working closely with all MIS departments to ensure timely and accurate data processing. Compliance with SOX, PCI, and MA201 standards is essential.
**A Day In The Life**
**1. Operations Monitoring & Support (45%)**
+ Monitor applications, processes, and server/database health
+ Analyze errors, malfunctions, and job failures to determine corrective actions
+ Manage job scheduler queues and console messages to meet SLAs
+ Operate monitoring and system admin tools to resolve incidents
+ Notify systems and programming teams of job run issues
+ Provide infrastructure support and initiate Command & Control meetings as needed
+ Understand and act on critical system failure urgency and escalation SLAs
**2. System & Application Administration (15%)**
+ Administer Linux and Windows OS environments, including security and third-party tools
+ Use command-line tools and understand networking fundamentals (NFS, NIS, DNS, Domains)
+ Write and maintain scripts (e.g., Shell, Perl) for automation and administrative tasks
+ Maintain runbooks and technical documentation
**3. Data Center & Maintenance Operations (20%)**
+ Perform hands-on data center tasks: racking/staking servers, installing PDUs, cabling
+ Conduct routine hardware/environmental maintenance and inspections
+ Clean file systems, restart services, and restore corrupted systems/files
+ Maintain logs and operational reports
+ Assist with hardware/software rollouts and inventory management
+ Monitor environmental conditions in data centers and server rooms
**4. Backup & Recovery Management (20%)**
+ Monitor and execute tape and digital backups/restores
+ Troubleshoot and escalate failed backups
+ Understand and operate backup hardware systems
**Scope and Impact:**
+ Requires a solid understanding of Data Center environments and components, including the operational impact of server and application downtime.
+ Must be able to independently troubleshoot and resolve system issues through to resolution.
+ Strong communication skills are essential for collaborating with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
+ Ability to travel between local campus locations as needed.
**You'll Come With**
**Education:**
+ High school diploma or GED required
+ Technical school training, associate, or bachelor’s degree preferred but not required
**Experience:**
+ Minimum 4 years of experience in IT operations and troubleshooting
+ At least 4 years of hands-on technical experience in relevant environments
**Skills and Abilities:**
+ Solid understanding of computer operations principles, practices, and techniques
+ Proven ability to follow technical instructions, both verbal and written
+ Working knowledge of Unix/Linux, Windows, command-line tools, NetBackup, Nagios, SolarWinds, and UC4 Scheduler preferred
+ Strong attention to detail and troubleshooting skills
+ Ability to maintain accurate and detailed operational logs
+ Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and drive results with minimal supervision
**Physical Requirements:**
+ Must be able to lift and install servers, climb ladders, work with raised flooring, and run cabling within the Data Center environment.
+ Occasional on-call responsibilities; minimal travel required.
+ The role involves physical activities such as occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling.
+ Requires significant fine motor skills and finger dexterity for handling equipment and performing technical tasks.
+ Typical work distribution: approximately 80% sitting, 10% walking, and 10% standing.
+ Work is performed in a controlled environment with minimal temperature variation and low exposure to hazards.
