About the Work Unit
The Executive Security Branch (ESB) is a special unit of the Colorado State Patrol. The unit consists of troopers, civilian security guards and command center workforce. The ESB provides 24-hour security at the State Capitol complex and at the Governor's Residence with transportation and security for Governor and the first Family. In addition, the unit provides protection and security services to the secretary of state, attorney general and state treasurer.
Work Environment
100% In-person
Work unit core business hours, Monday-Friday 8- 5pm, i.e. 24/7 Rotating Schedule, working rotating shifts including nights, weekends and holidays.

Supervision
+ Supervises a work unit as a first-line supervisor. Schedules and assigns security personnel to posts or patrols. Advises employees in handling problems or resolving complaints from customers. Evaluates members who perform distinct and separate units of work generally related to the purpose but requiring different processes and methodology. Administers unit- level programs in order to carry out agency objectives and written directives. Develops and documents security procedures, policies, or standards. Monitors unit operations; communicates with leadership on unit/branch performance and items or events of interest; initiates and reviews correspondence; analyzes and disseminates information to subordinate members. Observes operations, processes, and/or practices and methodologies for quality assurance and liability mitigation. Makes appropriate recommendations for change within their span of control. Maintains own and subordinate technical knowledge by attending training, and conferences, reviewing professional publications, establishing networks and benchmarking industry-accepted standards and practices. Ensures efficient, effective and professional communication is used both vertically and horizontally. Ensures all persons are treated fairly with dignity and respect. Provides day-to-day leadership, mentoring, direction and supervision to staff. Guides, trains, coaches and develops employees in the accomplishment of duties and professional goals. Develops and maintains the staffing schedules to ensure minimum staffing is met at the security checkpoints. Sets work expectations to provide the highest levels of customer service. Coordinates with the Security Manager and acts in this capacity of OIC in their absence.
+ Develops, implements and evaluates employee performance. Measures daily performance of security officers and implements improvement strategies. Plans training of security officers to maintain standard of the industry, including all safety aspects of job duties. Provides documentation to support recommended corrective and disciplinary actions. Addresses employee complaints and resolves informal grievances. Ensures chain of command is followed both vertically and horizontally within ESB.
+ Trains security officers. Manages and oversees various systems throughout the complex. Acts as a subject matter expert in the operations and use of these systems.Interacts with vendors to ensure systems are fully operational.
+ Attends meetings and hearings and provides complete and accurate testimony. Inspects and adjusts security equipment to ensure it is operational or to detect evidence of tampering. Orders materials or supplies, such as keys, uniforms, and badges. Patrols the premises to prevent or detect intrusion, protect property, or preserve order. Recruit, interview security personnel. Calls police or fire departments in cases of emergency, such as fire, bomb threats, and the presence of unauthorized persons. Explains department and division policies and procedures to staff using oral or written communication. Investigates disturbances on the premises, such as security alarms, altercations, and suspicious activity. Logs items distributed to persons, such as keys and key cards. Monitors the behavior of security employees to ensure adherence to quality standards, deadlines, or procedures. Schedules training or drills for emergencies, such as fires, bombs, and other threats.
Security
+ Provides the day-to-day security of the State Capitol and other Capitol complex buildings. This position patrols and monitors activities within the Capitol complex to ensure a safe environment. Conducts interior and exterior security tours of state buildings. Identifies unauthorized visitors and potential problems such as fire, water leaks, and vandalism. Interacts with visitors, tenants, and other outside authorities. Assists with managing emergencies. Provides services to tenants that may include but are not limited to; unlocking doors, motorist assists, after-hour escorts to private vehicles, and flying ceremonial flags. Controlling the entrance and departure of employees and visitors and vehicles. Managing and operating controlled access points, operating magnetometers, and x-ray machines.
+ Completes reports accurately and truthfully. Operates multiple systems related to safety and security throughout the complex. Operates wedge barrier controls. Interacts with vendors to ensure systems remain operational.
+ Other duties as assigned. Acts as OIC for the Security Manager in their absence.
Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

Two (2) years of relevant experience as a supervisor in Security or in a closely related field.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
+ Must be a Colorado Resident at the time of application.
+ Requires a valid Colorado Driver's License.
+ Must be willing to take job-related formal training courses.
+ This position includes physical demands that include: vision, hearing, stooping, standing, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and ability to walk up and down the stairs.
+ This position operates 24 hr/ 7 days a week. You will be required to work day shift, swing shift, and graveyard shifts.
+ This position must be available for schedules that may be changed or modified to meet the needs of the security unit during critical or high-profile events.
+ Must be willing to drive a State vehicle to the State Patrol Academy for training.
+ Applicants must be willing and able to pass an extensive background investigation that includes a polygraph examination, fingerprints and drug testing. Hired employees are subject to random drug testing.
+ The background investigation is based on the following criteria, including but not limited to: driving history, criminal behavior/history, alcohol use/behavior, drug use/behavior, and integrity. If you omit any material facts on your application, testing materials, or during the background interview or polygraph, you may be disqualified.
+ If any disqualifying information is discovered at any stage of the selection process, you may be removed from consideration. If you fail to follow instructions during the polygraph exam you may be removed from the process.
