CMC Process Engineer - Forming
Job Description SummaryThe CMC Process Engineer – Forming will be the technical owner for layup and tooling processes supporting ceramic matrix composite (CMC) components, with primary focus on GE9X Nozzles. You will define, industrialize, and continuously improve forming and layup processes and tooling, ensuring Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Cost performance. This role drives APQP, NPI, and Management of Change activities, partners closely with cross-functional teams and suppliers, and supports 24x7 manufacturing operations.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

Own equipment specifications, qualifications, technical governance, TPM, reliability engineering, OEE improvements, and consumables optimization

Serve as the plant focal for layup/tooling for GE9X Nozzles and coordinate across IPTs and suppliers

Lead tooling NPI: design, trials, lifecycle management, vendor management, and yield improvements

Develop and industrialize layup/forming concepts; optimize ply shapes and in-station material utilization

Own APQP for assigned scope; ensure control plans/PPAP readiness as applicable

Reduce PFMEA RPNs with robust prevention/detection controls; maintain risk registers

Lead RCCA using structured problem-solving (5-Why, Fishbone, DMAIC); lock in fixes with standard work

Deliver yield, cost, cycle time, and productivity improvements via equipment, process, and tooling changes

Execute Management of Change with capacity, safety, and quality impact assessments

Support lean initiatives with a Six Sigma mindset; standardize and sustain best practices

Train and certify technicians; author clear work instructions and standard work; mentor peers

Provide timely communications to technicians, engineers, site leadership, and executive leaders; align to business objectives

Support off-shift and on-call needs to minimize disruptions and protect SQDC; perform additional duties for 24x7 support

Ensure effective communication within the IPT, internal and external to Asheville

Qualifications / Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree accredited college or university (or a high school diploma / GED with a minimum of 4 years of experience in manufacturing engineering experience)

Desired Characteristics

Degree in ceramic engineering, materials science, or mechanical engineering

Experience in CMC/composite manufacturing (PMC/CMC), including complex shape design and layup

Proficiency in AutoCAD and/or CAD/CAM/CAE (e.g., Siemens NX); ability to read drawings/specs and translate to programs and processes

Demonstrated success in industrialization, yield improvement, and cost/cycle reduction

Strong analytical, mathematical, communication, and presentation skills; data-driven decision making

Proven experience training, mentoring, and leading small teams; ability to influence without authority

Lean manufacturing experience and passion; Six Sigma exposure

Knowledge of safety regulations, ISO/quality systems; experience with certifying agents/controlled title processes

Collaborative, boundaryless approach across hourly and salaried teams; strong sense of urgency for production support

Flexibility for off-shift/on-call support as needed
