Role Overview

Blackstone’s Platform Engineering team delivers the firm’s next‑generation public cloud platform, enabling application teams to securely build, deploy, and operate critical workloads at scale. The platform is designed with a strong emphasis on software‑defined infrastructure, automation, developer experience, and supporting innovation across a global organization.

This role is a senior-level individual contributor position at the Vice President level, not a people manager. As a VP Platform Engineer, you will serve as a hands-on technical leader, building and advancing core platform capabilities, and working in close partnership with application teams, security stakeholders, and fellow engineers to enable reliable and secure delivery at scale.

You will operate with a high degree of independence, applying strong software engineering principles and disciplined problem‑solving skills to design and evolve platform systems that operate at enterprise scale. Clear, effective communication is essential—you are expected to document technical decisions, articulate trade‑offs, and explain solutions to stakeholders with varying levels of technical experience. Success in this role requires strong organizational skills and collaborating effectively across a large, globally distributed engineering organization.

Key Responsibilities

Design, build, and evolve core platform services that underpin Blackstone’s public cloud environments, including AWS and Azure

Develop and manage Terraform‑based infrastructure, including authoring reusable modules, operating Terraform Cloud, and improving usability and self‑service for platform consumers

Own the design and implementation of critical platform components, from concept through production support

Build and enhance self‑service capabilities and internal developer tooling that improve consistency and developer productivity

Partner closely with cloud security and risk teams to ensure platforms are secure, compliant, and resilient by design

Improve platform availability, resiliency, and recoverability through modern architectural patterns and deployment strategies

Enhance observability, diagnostics, and operational supportability across the platform

Serve as a trusted technical resource and mentor for junior-level engineers and consultants, fostering a collaborative and inclusive team environment through approachability, reliability, and subject‑matter expertise

Work independently to gather requirements and design and implement solutions, while collaborating closely with cross‑functional partners (such as Application Security and SRE) to deliver platform capabilities as part of small, ad‑hoc teams within a large organization

Maintain strong delivery discipline, including prioritization, backlog management, and execution tracking using Jira

Participate in the team’s 24/7 on‑call rotation, typically approximately one week out of every four

Stay current with evolving trends in platform engineering, cloud services, modern DevOps, and automation practices to guide platform evolution

Required Qualifications

7+ years of experience in a platform engineering, infrastructure engineering, DevOps, or similar individual contributor role, with demonstrated ownership of shared platforms used by multiple engineering teams

Strong software development skills in Python or C#, with an emphasis on object oriented design and building and maintaining production‑oriented design and building and maintaining production quality services and applications, not just scripting or ‑quality services and applications, not just scripting or adhoc‑hoc automation

Experience building and operating platform capabilities as products, with a strong emphasis on developer experience, documentation, adoption, and continuous improvement

Deep, hands‑on experience with Terraform, including complex module design, state management, lifecycle operations, and production support of infrastructure‑as‑code at scale

Experience operating Terraform Cloud; Sentinel experience is preferred

Hands‑on experience operating public cloud platforms (AWS and/or Azure) in production environments

Experience designing, owning, and operating CI/CD pipelines, with a preference for GitLab CI/CD

Jenkins experience is preferred

Clear distinction between pipeline ownership and day‑today‑day pipeline usage is expected

Experience leading technical response during production incidents, including root cause analysis and post‑incident reviews

Strong understanding of distributed systems, cloud‑native architectures, and platform reliability and resiliency principles

Proficiency with Jira (or similar project management tooling) for planning, prioritization, and delivery tracking

Demonstrated experience mentoring and supporting engineers without formal authority, contributing to team effectiveness and technical growth within a large organization

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with Internal Developer Platforms (IDPs) such as Cortex (preferred), Backstage, or OpsLevel

Experience automating end-to‑to‑end developer workflows, from source control through CI/CD, deployment, and runtime operations

Experience working directly with application development teams to understand their needs and deliver platform capabilities that improve developer experience and productivity

Familiarity with containerized and serverless runtime environments, including Kubernetes and managed cloud-native services

Familiarity with SRE practices, including SLOs, SLIs, error budgets, and post-incident‑incident reviews

Experience contributing to technical roadmaps and architectural direction without formal people management‑management responsibilities

Experience designing internal APIs or services consumed by multiple teams

Experience operating platforms in regulated or security ‑conscious environments

Exposure to cloud cost optimization or FinOps practices

Experience with and understanding of fundamental networking concepts, including both physical networking and cloud-based‑based networking

Strong documentation practices, including clear runbooks, design proposals, and operational guides

Experience with TypeScript

What Sets You Apart

You are a trusted technical expert who is sought out for solving complex platform and infrastructure problems

You demonstrate strong ownership and accountability, taking initiatives from idea through successful production outcomes

You balance deep technical expertise with pragmatic decision‑making and sound engineering judgment

You communicate clearly and effectively, producing high‑quality documentation and explaining complex concepts to audiences with varying levels of technical experience

You influence technical direction and best practices through collaboration and example, without relying on formal authority

You actively mentor and support engineers, contributing to the overall technical growth and effectiveness of the organization

You operate calmly and decisively during high‑impact production issues, focusing on resolution, learning, and continuous improvement
