Job Description

Join AECOM’s Highway and Transportation Design Team in Roanoke, VA as an experienced Civil Engineer – Transportation Design. AECOM’s Roanoke office delivers some of the region’s most exciting and impactful transportation projects, offering engineers the opportunity to be involved with  high‑visibility transportation infrastructure projects.  In this role, you will contribute to a wide range of engaging and complex projects, including roadway and drainage design, highway and bridge improvements, traffic engineering analysis, and transportation planning studies. Key Responsibilities

Develop design criteria and produce roadway geometry, traffic control plans, signing and pavement marking layouts, drainage systems, and stormwater management solutions.Prepare detailed engineering drawings, specifications, and cost estimates for transportation projects.Create technical reports, tables, and graphics in accordance with client requirements and AECOM standards.Perform engineering calculations and analyses to support design decisions and ensure compliance with applicable regulations and standards.Follow and promote AECOM quality assurance procedures.Conduct site visits and field investigations to gather data and assess existing project conditions.Prepare presentations to communicate technical findings, recommendations, and constraints.Collaborate with multidisciplinary design teams to meet project scope, budget, and schedule requirements through responsible and ethical decision‑making.Support AECOM project managers and department managers with project execution.

 

Qualifications

Minimum: 

Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or an equivalent engineering discipline, plus four (4) years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification.Demonstrated experience using Bentley OpenRoads Designer (ORD), AutoCAD Civil 3D, and/or similar highway or transportation design software.

PREFERRED:

Design experience with VDOT projectsExperience in civil engineering with an emphasis on Roadway, Drainage, and Traffic projectsAbility and willingness to offer mentorship to various levels of staffAbility and willingness to operate within a hybrid work schedule environment with hybrid teamsProfessional Engineer (PE) License in any state, or ability to obtain PE within 1 year of hireDegree accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET
