Carpenter Supervisor

Facilities Management (FM) is offering an exciting opportunity for a Carpenter Supervisor to support the department’s goal of delivering consistent, cost-effective, and reliable carpentry services within the University’s Central Grounds Zone. This position supports both historic and modern facilities, including Thomas Jefferson’s Academical Village—a UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring the Rotunda, Pavilions, and Lawn and Range student rooms—as well as contemporary academic buildings.

Carpenter Supervisors are responsible for coordinating and overseeing a wide range of carpentry and painting activities, including repairs, renovations, and installations. The role emphasizes maintaining the structural integrity, functionality, and appearance of University facilities. Special attention is given to historic structures to ensure all work complies with established historic preservation standards, while also meeting the operational needs of modern buildings.

This position plays a critical role in scheduling and coordinating maintenance projects, inspections, and repairs. The Supervisor ensures work is completed safely, efficiently, and to a high standard of quality, supporting the University community by combining traditional carpentry expertise with modern maintenance practices to enhance and preserve the University facilities.

Facilities Management (FM) supports the University of Virginia's wide range of research, academic and patient care programs. With over 1,100 employees dedicated to excellence, Facilities Management is responsible for the day-to-day operation, repair, and maintenance of UVA's buildings, infrastructure, and grounds as well as other University-owned and leased properties.

Duties Include:

Lead skilled and unskilled staff in the maintenance and renovations of buildings and equipment.

Provide excellent customer service and communication.

Supervise and train employees that may specialize in carpentry and painting.

Prioritize work and delegate assignments to ensure timely and efficient completion of projects.

Recommend or initiate personnel actions and administer the organization's policies for the department.

Provide information for record-keeping, and management of supply and equipment resources.

Maintain accurate work order records and timecards within the work order system.

Plan and schedule projects and maintenance work, making modifications as necessary.

Coordinate skilled trade support from FM’s specialty trades and outside vendors.

Ability to respond to urgent repair needs outside of normal working hours.

Collaborate with historic preservationists, supervisors and project managers.

Solve technical problems and keeps current of new products and techniques.

Inform customers of job status, reasons for and duration of expected delays, as well as refer customers to the manager when appropriate.

Foster a safe work environment by instructing and monitoring compliance of OSHA, federal, state, and local regulations.

Provide support for events and coordinate staff availability.

In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Required Qualifications:

Education: High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience: Minimum of seven [7] years of experience in all aspects of the carpentry operations trade); two or more years of supervisory and/or leadership experience strongly preferred.

Licensure: Valid Driver's License with a zero or positive points balance and at least 2 years of driving experience.

Anticipated Compensation: $37 - $40 per hour ($76,960 - $83,200 annually); dependent on experience and qualifications.

This is a full-time position with UVA benefits. 

For this position, the selected candidate will need to complete the required background checks prior to the start date of the position.  This position is based in Charlottesville, VA, and must be performed fully on-site. 

Physical Demands: Employee must be able to variously sit, stand, walk, climb stairs and ladders, crawl, stoop, bend, squat, lift, pull, and use both hands-on repetitive tasks (including overhead tasks).  Employees must have normal vision and hearing (correctable), and for some areas of employment, color vision and sense of smell.
