Key duties include responding to donor referrals, providing hospital education, advocating for donation to prospective families and supporting those who authorize the gift of life.
Duties include:
On-call referral response & evaluation: available each weekday (M-F 0800 - 1600) to respond to donor referrals at assigned hospitals, primarily UHS, Lourdes, as well as Garnet Harris Campus and Cooperstown. Outside of regular hours, takes overnight on-call approximately 15 days p/month, including 2 weekends. Splits monthly on-call equitably with the other peer Donation Specialist.
Obtaining authorization for donation: collaborates with the health care team to meet with potential donor families regarding the option of donation. In a sensitive and caring manner, leads the discussion about donation with patients’ families. Provides emotional support and relays information in a clear and sincere manner. Utilizes a dual advocacy approach to advocate for people awaiting lifesaving transplant.
Providing family support: following authorization for donation, the Donation Specialist supports the family throughout the donation process, establishing a plan for communication, offering memory making, connecting the family to hospital services (ex: social work, pastoral care), etc.
Clinical support- partners with both the hospital staff and CDT clinical team to support the initial clinical aspects of donation (ex: address any immediate
clinical needs- ex: pressor support, plan for brain death declaration, obtain blood draw for testing, hand off to CDT clinical team member).
Hospital education & community advocacy- Outside of on-call days, the Donation Specialist works with hospitals to provide education and other supportive initiatives (ex: audits, policy reviews, meetings) to maximize awareness and readiness for donation.
Workplace is a combination of in-office, work-from-home and at partner hospitals. CDT provides cell phone, laptop and other technical equipment. Mileage is reimbursed at the federal mileage rate.
Compensation is comprised of salary, on-call (paid flat rate per day, $52 p/weekday, $78 p/weekend day), and supplemental (1.5x hourly rate for any hour over 40 in a given week). Total compensation to exceed $100,000.
