Automation Designer II - Service

Based out of our Acheson Powell Service Division location, the Automation Engineer /Designer II is responsible for applying innovative and creative solutions to solve problems for our clients. Key responsibilities include engineering, testing, maintaining and supporting automation solutions as well as intelligent products in MV/LV switchgear applications. Essential Responsibilities + Review and interpret client specifications to produce project Functional Design, drawings and test documentation in accordance with the project requirements and Powell standard procedures. + Design ENMCS, PMS, SCADA, RTU and Communication Panels – Create and layout hardware panels that integrate SCADA interfaces, remote ‑ terminal units (RTUs), and associated communication modules (e.g., Ethernet, serial, fiber optics). Produce wiring diagrams, panel schematics, bill ‑ of ‑ materials, and installation/commissioning procedures that meet industry standards and project specifications. + Configure HMI and SCADA systems using a range of software packages (SEL RTAC AcSELerator Diagram Builder, Allen Bradley FactoryTalk, Copa Data Zenon, and/or WonderWare InTouch). + Develop Real-Time Automation Controller (RTAC) and PLC based electrical system monitoring and controls solutions. + Implement industrial communication protocols and standards such as Modbus (RTU and TCP/IP), IEC61850, DNP 3.0, etc. + Develop documentation and participate in factory and on-site acceptance testing (FAT and SAT respectively), as well as perform start-up and commissioning activities as required. + Become proficient in Powell Automation solutions and offerings and mentor junior staff. + Ensure that the company’s Health, Safety & Environmental policies and procedures are constantly adhered to all aspects of Site Services. + Perform other duties as assigned or required. Required Qualifications + BS in a technical discipline, preferably an Electrical Engineer, from an accredited institution. + At least 5+ years of relevant Automation experience with a minimum of 2 years in substation automation and control systems projects. + Hands‑on experience designing, programming, and commissioning PLCs, RTACs, SCADA/DCS, and HMI solutions for switchgear and substation applications is a must. + Proficiency with core industrial communication standards/protocols such as Modbus (RTU/TCP), IEC 61850, DNP3, and similar standards . + Familiarity with protective relay programming and field commissioning ( considered a plus). + Strong analytical and trouble shooting skills. + Solid grounding in three‑phase power, electrical theory, and distribution equipment . + Knowledge of applicable electrical codes, standards, and regulations. + Practical experience applying electrical‑power‑system knowledge to solve customer issues and recommend upgrades . + Familiar with test equipment and testing procedures for power delivery. + Valid driver’s licence with a clean record . Skills, Abilities & Other Requirements + Outgoing self-starter with a drive to act quickly. + Able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team; adaptable, self‑starting, and innovative , and willing to make a difference + Exceptional communication, interpersonal and leadership skills, and ability to develop and maintain strong relationships with customers and team members + Familiarity with environmental protection procedures and basic electrical safety practices + Commitment to maintaining a safe work site for oneself and teammates . + Ability to read, interpret, and develop electrical drawings, procedures, and documentation . + Well organized. + Proficient with Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, Outlook) . + Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a customer‑focused attitude . + Proven capability to prioritize and manage multiple concurrent tasks.
