PurposeEnterprise Technology at the University of Texas at Austin seeks an innovative, relationship-focused leader to serve as Associate Vice President of Enterprise Initiatives & Instructional Technology. This role offers a unique opportunity to shape the future of technology-enabled teaching and learning at one of the world's premier research universities while leading major institutional transformation programs and building digital dexterity across the campus community.
The person in this role will:
Own the complete technology-enabled learning ecosystem, integrating learning management systems, instructional technology, learning spaces, digital accessibility, and faculty engagement into a unified strategy.
Lead digital adoption across the campus community, building faculty and staff fluency with M365, Canvas, AI platforms (including Sage), and learning space technologies.
Lead 2–3 major CIO-initiated transformation programs that span organizational boundaries and require sophisticated stakeholder management and execution discipline.
Partner with the AI Studio to translate AI platform innovations into faculty-facing programs, training, and support, driving meaningful adoption of AI capabilities in teaching and learning.
This position works at the intersection of instructional technology operations, digital adoption leadership, strategic program execution, and institutional partnership. This role will build deep relationships with the senior leadership team within the Office of the CIO, as well as the Offices of the Provost, Chief Operating Officer, Chief Financial Officer, and Deans while serving as one of the CIO's strategic partners for complex initiatives that do not fit neatly into traditional portfolio structures.

ResponsibilitiesInstructional Technology Leadership: Provide strategic direction and operational oversight for UT Austin's academic technology ecosystem, ensuring technology serves pedagogy and advances teaching excellence.
Instructional Technology Solutions:
Canvas learning management system operations serving 50,000+ students and faculty
Instructional technology and faculty engagement programs
Educational technology support and training
Teaching with technology community building and innovation
Digital Accessibility Services:
Institutional leadership for accessible course design and content
Universal design for learning principles and practice
Faculty support for accessibility compliance and inclusive pedagogy
Accessibility integration across learning environments and technologies
Learning Spaces & Educational Environments:
Technology strategy for formal and informal learning spaces across campus
Active learning environment design and pedagogical support
Integration of classroom technology with learning platforms and AI tools
Partnership with the Office of the Provost, all Colleges and Schools, as well as Facilities and Planning on learning space modernization
Create a sustainable funding model that supports world-class learning spaces at scale
Digital Adoption & Campus Dexterity: Lead institutional efforts to build digital fluency across the campus community, ensuring faculty and staff can effectively leverage enterprise technology platforms to advance teaching, learning, and operations.
Digital Dexterity Programs:
M365 Adoption: Drive campus-wide fluency with Microsoft 365 tools including Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, and productivity applications
Canvas Excellence: Expand faculty capabilities in learning management system use, course design, and pedagogical innovation
AI Platform Adoption: Partner with AI Studio to drive faculty and staff adoption of UT Sage, M365 Copilot, and other AI tools
Learning Spaces Fluency: Ensure faculty can effectively utilize classroom technology and active learning environments
Adoption Strategy & Execution:
Develop and execute comprehensive digital adoption strategies aligned with institutional priorities
Design and deliver training programs, workshops, and just-in-time learning resources
Build faculty and staff champion networks to accelerate peer-to-peer adoption
Measure and report adoption metrics, satisfaction, and institutional impact
Create communities of practice around technology-enabled teaching and operations
Change Management & Engagement:
Lead change management strategies for new technology rollouts and platform migrations
Build trusted relationships with faculty governance, academic departments, and administrative units
Gather feedback from campus community to inform technology strategy and platform development
Ensure adoption efforts address equity, accessibility, and diverse learner needs
Enterprise Program Execution: Lead 2–3 major institutional transformation programs requiring executive sponsorship, cross-functional coordination, and strategic stakeholder engagement.
The programs will:
Span multiple Enterprise Technology portfolios and academic/administrative units
Address complex institutional challenges without obvious organizational homes
Require sophisticated change management and adoption strategies
Demand measurable outcomes and accountability to institutional leadership
Example Initiatives:
Design and implementation of scalable instructional spaces program
Unified printing capabilities across all areas of the university
Academic data analytics and learning insights programs
Learning space modernization aligned with pedagogical innovation
AI Integration & Faculty Adoption Leadership: Partner with the AI Studio to translate AI platform innovations into faculty-facing programs, training, and support.
The responsibilities include:
Adoption Strategy: Work with the AI Studio to identify use cases where AI can enhance learning outcomes and create faculty adoption pathways
Feedback Loop: Gather faculty feedback on AI capabilities and inform AI Studio platform development priorities
Peer Champion Networks: Work with the AI Studio to build faculty champion networks for AI adoption across colleges and schools
Strategic Partnerships: Build and maintain executive-level partnerships that position Enterprise Technology as an essential academic partner, not just a service provider.
Key Relationships:
AVP, AI Platforms & Innovation: Primary partner for AI platform strategy; receives platforms from AI Studio and leads campus-wide adoption, training, and faculty engagement
Strategic Initiatives Office: Leverage program management frameworks and governance standards
Chief Operating Officer: Joint strategy for learning space planning and capital investments
Chief Financial Officer: Develop long-term financial models to advance teaching, learning, and technology
Provost and Academic Deans: Technology support for teaching and learning innovation
Faculty Leadership: Faculty voice in academic technology strategy and policy
Faculty Engagement & Community Building: Create systematic approaches to faculty engagement, technology adoption, and learning communities.
Expand faculty-facing programs, symposia, and peer learning networks
Build faculty champion networks for teaching with technology and AI adoption
Establish recognition programs for excellence in technology-enabled teaching
Integrate AI platforms with instructional design and learning space strategy
Perform other related functions as assigned.
Required QualificationsInstructional Technology Expertise:
15+ years of progressive IT leadership in higher education; 7+ years in senior roles
Deep experience leading academic technology operations (LMS, instructional design, faculty engagement)
Proven success building and scaling academic technology teams and programs
Track record of creating faculty engagement programs that drive technology adoption
Digital Adoption & Change Leadership:
Demonstrated success leading enterprise-wide technology adoption programs
Experience building digital dexterity and technology fluency across diverse populations
Track record developing training programs, workshops, and change management strategies
Experience managing complex, multi-year initiatives spanning organizational boundaries
Comfort with ambiguity—ability to lead initiatives without predefined structures
AI & Emerging Technology Leadership:
Experience translating emerging technologies into faculty adoption programs (not building the technology)
Working knowledge of generative AI tools and their educational applications
Understanding of responsible AI principles, bias mitigation, and ethical AI use in academic contexts
Demonstrated ability to facilitate cross-functional partnerships between technical and academic teams
Track record of leading faculty development on new technologies
Relationship Building and Partnership:
Exceptional ability to build trust and collaborative relationships with faculty and academic leaders
Experience in creating effective partnerships at Provost, Dean, and executive levels
Proven success navigating complex political environments and building stakeholder coalitions

Salary Range$210,000 + depending on qualifications
