Perform professional and administrative services essential for the health, safety and welfare of over 400+ student-athletes. Responsible for oversight of team physicians, training room personnel, and extended medical staff within the guidelines set forth by the NATA / BOC , NCAA and the State of Texas to ensure a high standard of care for all student – athletes. Description of Duties + Responsible for the operation of the athletic training facilities, as well as the direct medical care of all student-athletes, including aiding medical personnel with the prevention and treatment of athletically related injuries incurred by student athletes. + Oversees medical staff, including athletic trainers and student trainers. + Oversees the budget of the Athletic Training Room, including the purchase of equipment and supplies. + Directs operations for educational programming and coordinate drug testing programs. + Manages and maintains various records, reports and information on injuries, treatments, etc. for insurance, legal or professional purposes. + Responsible for reporting pertinent injury and performance information to the NCAA . + Attends scheduled team practices and competitions, including but not limited to home and away events for sports as assigned. + Communicates with team physicians, and extended medical staff, to ensure proper evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of injured student athletes. + Communicates effectively with coaches/student-athletes regarding injuries and playing status. Reports regularly on various metrics and operational objectives to head coaches and senior administrative staff. + Follows the NATA Code of Ethics. Remains current on all state and national requirements for license renewal. + Ensures compliance of Federal Rules and Regulations ( HIPAA ) regarding confidentiality and electronic communication. + Leads the Strength & Conditioning staff in the development of appropriate protocols and rehabilitation programs for student-athletes. + Reviews, manages, and assists in the negotiation of the department’s secondary insurance policy; serve as the primary overseer of all medical billing related to athletics-related injuries. + Manages and oversees the athletics Mental Health Task Force, facilitating discussions on identified at-risk cases and emerging issues that may impact student-athlete well-being. + Serves as the primary athletics representative in monthly coordination meetings with UT Health to review, discuss, and address topics affecting departmental operations. + Performs other duties and special projects as assigned. Supervision Received General supervision from Sr. VP and Director of Athletics. Supervision Given Supervises assigned professional staff and student trainers. Required Education Bachelor’s degree in athletic training, kinesiology, or related field of study. Preferred Education Master’s degree in athletic training, kinesiology, or related field of study. Licenses/Certifications + As condition of employment this position requires the applicant to be authorized to operate a University-Owned Vehicle for Official University Business. Per University of Texas System Policy 157, applicants will be subject to a motor vehicle record check for their most recent thirty-six (36) month history. Out of State Drivers are required to submit a 36-month history MVR from their prior State of residence(s). + NATA BOC Certification or eligible for certification exam. + Texas License as an Athletic Trainer through Texas Department of Health or be eligible for exam. Required Experience Four (4) years of experience in athletic training. Must have demonstrated knowledge of NCAA rules and sports medicine standards of care, ability to apply NATA / BOC code of ethics to care, excellent organizational and supervisory skills, strong communication skills, and a strong commitment to professional growth, demonstrated experience working effectively in a diverse environment, and experience working in a comprehensive sports medicine environment. Preferred Experience Previous experience as a Head Athletic Trainer in an intercollegiate athletics program, preferably at the NCAA DI level. Previous experience with student-athlete healthcare insurance programs. More than the required years of experience in athletic training, leadership experience, and experience working with insurance and medical record programs. Preference will be given to candidates that can most effectively meet the progressive needs of UTRGV’s Sports Medicine Program. Equipment Standard office equipment including personal computer, fax, and telephone. Use of ultrasound therapy, electrical stimulation therapy, hydrotherapy tank, hydrocollator unit, microcurrent stim therapy. Working Conditions Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Long and varied hours. Ability to work weekends and/or evenings on a constant basis; Travel with overnight and/or multi-day stays required. Possibility of working in dangerous conditions such as blood borne pathogen related areas. Possibility of working in inclement weather conditions (i.e. cold, heat, rain, etc.). UTRGV is a distributed institution, which may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley.
