Job Description
A Glimpse of the Job
The Assistant Vice President develops, oversees, and directs the student affairs division and departmental projects, programs, initiatives, and/or activities for the Galveston campus. The position oversees the business-related activities of student activities, counseling, career services, campus recreation, campus discipline, campus living and learning, student assistance services, new student conferences, and manages compliance activities. Supervises subordinate staff.
Essential Duties/Tasks
+ Provides direction and supervision of assigned employees - Determines work priorities and assigns work accordingly. Embraces an environment of openness and respect among staff. Ensures that staff are afforded the opportunity to develop and grow. Promotes an environment that is respectful of others and promotes honest feedback and coaching of employees. Ensures that staff are properly trained to be successful. Ensures employees are appropriately evaluated and position descriptions are current.
+ Administer operations of Student Affairs - Administers the day-to-day operation of the division. Advises and provides recommendations to the COO on a variety of internal and external issues affecting the division operations. Represents student affairs and the campus on various internal and external Committees, and makes presentations as needed.
+ Strategic Planning - Leads the development and implementation of the division’s strategic plan, establishing division goals and objectives. Collaborates with internal and external entities to facilitate campus wide initiatives and coordinate special projects as assigned by the campus COO. Assist in fund raising efforts to finance various initiatives.
+ Administrative Policy Review and Implementation - Administers, drafts, and makes recommendations for relevant policies, regulations, and rules. Evaluates the effectiveness of departmental operations and implements organizational and/or programmatic changes as necessary to maintain effective and compliant programs. Coordinates and assesses continuous improvement efforts. Develop communication processes within the department to provide clear guidance and solutions.
+ Legal Review/Compliance - Provides guidance, monitoring, and analysis of state and federal legislative and leadership issues and coordinates such activities of the division.
+ Coordinate special projects - Works with various internal and external entities to facilitate initiatives, and coordinates special projects as assigned by the Vice President.
+ Budget Preparation and Accounts Management - Develop, prepare, and manage the department’s annual budget. Monitor expenditures and ensure adherence to budgetary constraints.
+ Crisis Response - Serve as lead for student crisis response including chair of CARE (Campus Behavioral Intervention) Team. Respond to student crises including car wrecks or incidents in residence hall. Serve as reporting lead for student Title IX cases. Serve as Operations Section Chief for Campus Crisis Response Team. Advise campus COO on social media response as well as consult with media relations.
+ Student Conduct - Directs the annual editing and publishing of the University Student Rules and related publications and procedures. Oversees the student discipline system, ensuring due process and the protection of student rights. Serves as Appeal Officer when Administrative Hearing Officer findings are applied. Oversee case investigations, hearings and appeals involving allegations of academic dishonesty. Communicates with accused students regarding the status of their case. Oversees and manages the honor system files. Oversees and manages the Galveston Aggie Honor System website. Provides orientation to Honor Council membership. Ensure adherence to Title IX policies and procedures.
+ Safety, Risk Management, and Other - Recommends safety procedures and measures for all services, activities and facilities within the Student Affairs Division. Promulgates approved safety policies and procedures. Supervises and enforces safety. Performs other duties as assigned

Required Education and Experience:
+ Bachelor's degree in Higher Education or related degree
+ 10 years experience of progressively responsible experience in Higher Education Student Affairs
Preferred Qualifications
+ Doctoral degree from an accredited college or university
+ 5 years of leadership experience in higher education

+ Excellent organizational, management, communication, leadership and interpersonal skills
+ Knowledge and application of student development theory
+ Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing
+ Ability to positively and professionally interact with Students, parents, staff and faculty
+ Excellent communication and presentation skills with a strong professional image
+ Working knowledge of office software and instructional programs
+ Knowledge of principles and methods for teaching and instructing individuals and groups
+ Skilled in utilizing various learning and active listening strategies
+ Ability to orally comprehend and express information and use inductive and deductive reasoning
+ Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others
Physical Requirements
+ Ability to move up to 25 lbs. with assistance
+ Ability to travel independently to other and/or remote locations by driving and/or flying on commercial airlines

+ This position requires compliance with state and federal laws/codes and Texas A&M University System/TAMU policies, regulations, rules and procedures
+ All tasks and job responsibilities must be performed safely without injury to self or others in compliance with System and University safety requirements
+ This position may require up to 10% or more travel
+ This position may require work beyond normal office hours and/or work on weekends
+ This position will directly supervise and evaluate the work of others
