GFT’s Construction Services Business Line in the City New York is seeking an Assistant Resident Engineer to support an on-going multi-disciplinary project in Staten Island, New York located in close proximity to the Staten Island Ferry Terminal.

What you’ll be challenged to do:

 

As an Assistant Resident Engineer at GFT, you will play a visible role in delivering critical infrastructure that protects public health and supports daily life in New York City. You will contribute to the modernization of a vital sanitary pump station in Staten Island, helping ensure reliable wastewater service for the surrounding community while navigating the complexity of construction in a dense, highly constrained urban environment.

 

This role will challenge you to grow as an engineer by working across multiple trades and disciplines, gaining exposure to new building construction, civil and utility systems, and temporary infrastructure that keeps essential services operating during construction. You will collaborate closely with utility providers and adjacent capital projects, strengthening your ability to manage interfaces and solve real-world construction challenges.

 

Through hands-on involvement and direct coordination with experienced construction leaders, you will deepen your technical judgment, communication skills, and understanding of how large public works projects come together. The work you support will have a lasting community impact, while positioning you for continued advancement within GFT’s Construction Services team.

 

In the capacity, you will be responsible for the following:

Support the Construction Manager and Resident Engineer in the delivery of a complex, multi-disciplinary construction project

Read, interpret, and apply contract plans, specifications, and technical documents

Manage and coordinate office and field inspection staff, as required

Review contractor monthly applications for payment and supporting documentation

Review contractor schedules, assess progress, and coordinate schedule impacts with the project team

Coordinate NYC Department of Buildings Special Inspections with third-party Special Inspectors

Attend, participate in, and chair monthly, bi-weekly, and ad hoc technical meetings with project stakeholders when required

Prepare internal technical memoranda documenting project issues, status, and resolutions

Coordinate with Con Edison and adjacent capital projects by others

Maintain clear written and verbal communication with the project team and external stakeholders

Be available for periodic night and weekend work based on construction operations

Perform related duties as required

What you will bring to our firm:

Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline

Minimum of 5 years of experience on New York area heavy construction, multi-trade public works projects with coordination across public and private utility stakeholders

Experience on NYCDEP projects; experience with NYCDDC, NYC DOT, NYSDOT, NYCEDC, MTA, or contractors working for these agencies will also be considered

Familiarity with construction management information systems such as e-Builder, Site Manager, A-Site, Unifier, Procore, or similar platforms

OSHA 10 certification required, with ability to obtain OSHA 30 within three months

Physical ability to work on active construction sites, including navigating uneven terrain, traffic, excavations, ladders, heavy equipment, and outdoor work in varying weather conditions

What we prefer you bring:Professional Engineer license in New York preferred, or ability to obtain New York PE within six months; comparable education, training, and experience may be consideredCompensation:

The salary range for this role is $149,000 - $172,000 per year. Salary is dependent upon experience and geographic location.
