Department Summary:
MITRE’s Human Language Technology (HLT) Department works across the full range of US Government agencies to provide language processing solutions to address complex mission needs for our sponsors. Our work provides opportunities to apply language processing solutions to real-world challenges and to research and prototype new methods to address mission needs. We are looking for highly motivated, adaptive, and self-directed candidates to perform research, development, engineering, evaluation, and integration in the area of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), with particular emphasis on leveraging large language models (LLMs) to support a diverse set of mission needs across MITRE’s sponsor base. We are looking for expertise in areas such as LLMs, machine learning, model training and deployment, model evaluation, retrieval augmented generation (RAG) systems, GraphRAG, MLOps, fine-tuning models and prompt engineering.
Roles & Responsibilities:
The position involves researching, developing, evaluating, and integrating GenAI and LLM capabilities. Specific responsibilities will include:
Work in and provide technical leadership to cross-functional teams to develop and implement generative AI solutions and prototypes, including capabilities that leverage large language model (LLM) technologyAnalyze sponsor mission needs and recommend innovative prototypes and solutions that leverage cutting edge generative AI technologiesFine-tune and optimize models to improve model performance and to support real-world mission needs across MITRE’s sponsor baseEvaluate technology solutions in the context of mission data and workflow needs, and provide actionable recommendations for improving the performance of models and/or componentsConvey complex ideas to non-technical audiences through briefings and/or white papersLead small teams to solve technical challenges by applying GenAI capabilitiesLeverage MITRE’s Federal AI Sandbox (NVIDIA DGX SuperPod hardware) and AI Platform to support research, development and evaluation of generative AI capabilitiesBasic Qualifications:
Requires a minimum of 5 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, linguistics, or related disciplines; or 3 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with relevant experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.Demonstrated recent experience with LLM technology and applicationsKnowledge of and experience in prototyping/developing human language technology components/systemsAbility to apply state-of-the-art machine learning and LLM techniques to real-world problemsAbility to work independently to learn new technologies, methods, processes, frameworks/platforms, and systemsExperience with programming languages such as Java or PythonDemonstrated recent experience in prototyping/developing human language technology components/systemsExcellent written and verbal communication skills to articulate challenging technical concepts to both lay and expert audiencesAbility to obtain and maintain a US government security clearance within one year from date of hirePer the U.S. Government’s eligibility requirements, you must be a U.S Citizen to be considered for a security clearance.This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-sitePreferred Qualifications:
