UW faculty and staff also enjoy outstanding benefits, professional growth opportunities and unique resources in an environment noted for diversity, intellectual excitement, artistic pursuits, and natural beauty. **The Department of Comparative Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for an Animal Facility Program Supervisor (E S SEIU 925 Supv) to join their team.** **OBJECTIVE** The Animal Facility Program Supervisor will ensure that the facility not only meets operational and compliance requirements but also continuously evolves to support the needs of the research community and maintain the highest standards of animal welfare. This position requires a broad understanding of animal facility operations, strong managerial skills, and a commitment to regulatory excellence. **DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES** Leadership & Staff Management (25%) + Oversee and mentor animal care personnel, including technicians and supervisory staff. + Manage hiring processes, training, scheduling, performance evaluations, and, when necessary, corrective actions to maintain a skilled and effective team. + Establish clear work priorities and ensure staffing levels meet the facility’s operational needs.Operational Oversight (20%) + Ensure smooth daily operations of the animal facility. This includes coordinating animal housing, movement, and care routines in support of research and operational goals. + Maintain accurate records for animal care, equipment, and services; manage inventories of essential supplies and equipment to support uninterrupted facility operations. + Oversee equipment and facility maintenance programs, including scheduling routine upkeep, certifications, and repairs to uphold high standards of facility performance.Regulatory Compliance & Quality Assurance (20%) + Contribute to the creation and implementation of facility policies, procedures, and quality control measures that align with institutional, state, and federal regulations. + Act as a primary contact during regulatory reviews and accreditation visits, ensuring that all required standards are met and issues are promptly resolved. + Serve as the point of contact for internal research teams, external vendors, and regulatory bodies to ensure that operational and compliance needs are effectively communicated and addressed.Administrative & Support (20%) + Assist in the development of program policies and budgets, providing input and data to support planning and resource allocation decisions. + Identify opportunities to refine operational practices, streamline administrative processes, and integrate innovative techniques that support both cost-effectiveness and excellence in animal care. + Represent the facility in meetings with departmental leadership, research staff, and other stakeholders to discuss operational updates, staffing needs, and strategic initiatives.Safety & Emergency Preparedness (10%) + Champion a proactive safety and emergency preparedness culture by ensuring all personnel are trained on and adhere to established safety protocols. + Provide on-call support for emergency animal care issues and ensure that proper procedures are in place to respond to unexpected situations. + Oversee waste management and other environmentally related practices, ensuring that operations conform to relevant transportation and hazardous waste regulations.Other duties as needed (5%) **MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS** + American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) certification or AALAS Certified Manager of Animal Resources (CMAR) certification.AND + High school graduation or equivalent AND a minimum of three years of experience working in an animal research environment, two years of which must be at an Animal Technician Supervisor level, or equivalent.OR + Two years of college with major study in animal or life science or similar discipline AND a minimum of two years of experience working in an animal research environment, to include one year which must be at an Animal Technician Supervisor level or equivalent.OR + Bachelor’s Degree with major study in animal or life science or similar discipline and one year of experience in an animal research environment at an Animal Technician Supervisor level or equivalent. **Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.** **ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS** + A working knowledge of animal husbandry standards and regulatory guidelines and requirements, standard operating procedures for species of animals used in biomedical research, and special handling techniques for radioactive or infectious materials. + Experience and understanding of Animal Biosafety Level 2 work processes and principles. + Supervisory experience including hiring and evaluating staff and resolving personnel issues. + Ability to work collaboratively in a research environment with culturally diverse populations and with individuals of varying educational and professional backgrounds (e.g., Animal Technicians, Veterinarians, Research Technicians, Principal Investigators). + Demonstrated problem solving, leadership, and effective delegation skills. + Ability to review goals, analyze processes, and develop approaches and systems required to meet those goals. + Ability to maintain schedules for several projects. + Ability to maintain detailed and accurate records including inventories of facility supplies. + Ability to work independently with minimal direct supervision. + Demonstrated professionalism, self-motivation, and attention to detail. + Ability to work collaboratively in a research environment with culturally diverse populations and with individuals of varying educational and professional backgrounds (e.g., Animal Technicians, Veterinarians, Research Technicians, Principal Investigators). + Excellent verbal and written communication skills with superior organizational abilities and demonstrated ability to work in a team environment. + Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (e.g., Word, Excel, and Outlook) and calendaring systems; ability to learn proprietary database systems. + Must be able to work effectively and positively with others in a team environment. + Must be able to pass a Washington State Patrol background check. + Must have a current Washington driver’s license. + Must be comfortable working in biohazard facilities. **CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT** + Physical ability to do required work. + Must be willing and able to work with a wide variety of research animals. + Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and carry 30 pounds. + Prolonged periods of standing, reaching and bending. + This position requires considerable use of arms and legs and activities such as lifting, balancing, walking, and stooping. + Must be able to stand and walk for a full 8-hour shift. + Must be able to perform repetitive motions over extended periods of time. + May be required to work with and take specific precautions, against and/or be immunized against potentially infectious agents. Specific precautions may include wearing respirators and/or protective clothing. + Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. **DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS** + Bachelor's degree in biology, animal science, or related field. + Minimum of two years of supervisory experience with a diverse staff. + Experience and an aptitude for machine and motor operations and repair. + Experience operating a box truck and a small car (Prius). + Detailed recordkeeping experience. + Experience with emergency/disaster preparedness planning. + Hold a valid Washington State driver's license that has not been suspended or revoked for the past three years for any reason. + Ability to successfully complete University driver education and training. + Experience cultivating positive communications in a culturally diverse workplace.
