The Operating Room at Baystate Medical Center is a high-acuity, fast-paced surgical environment within the region’s only Level 1 Trauma Center. Summary

The Anesthesia Technician, under the general supervision of the Registered Nurse (RN) and/or physician, performs a variety of routine direct and indirect patient care activities and technical tasks in the anesthesia setting. This role supports anesthesia services across multiple procedural areas and is responsible for equipment preparation, maintenance, and troubleshooting within established departmental policies. This description reflects the essential functions of the role; additional similar or related duties may be assigned upon demonstrated competency.

Job Responsibilities

1) Equipment maintenance, troubleshooting, and preparation

Serves as the first point of contact for troubleshooting anesthesia equipment and reports status to Clinical Engineering.

Maintains repair records and performs cleaning/disinfection of TEE probes and anesthesia equipment.

Prepares operating rooms for anesthesia care, including setting up IV solutions and fluid warmers per procedure or provider request.

2) Case support across diverse procedural areas

Provides anesthesia room setup, turnover, and technical support for all case types including OB, Centennial, Chestnut Surgery Center, IVF, Cardiac, Trauma, Remote Sites, Endoscopy, Cancer Center, and Difficult Airway.

Assists the Difficult Airway Team in preparing equipment on airway carts.

3) Continuing education and performance improvement

Maintains required continuing education and participates in organizational performance improvement initiatives.

4) Supply and equipment management

Orders, stocks, and maintains anesthesia supplies and equipment.

Performs daily and monthly quality control (I-stat and other equipment).

Assists in emergency equipment setup as directed by the physician and/or RN.

5) Age-appropriate patient care

Demonstrates understanding of developmental stages and provides care appropriate for adults, adolescents, children, infants, toddlers, and neonates.

6) Safety, infection control, and equipment review

Follows procedures for anesthesia supplies, troubleshooting equipment issues, and reporting equipment needs.

Conducts daily equipment inspections, removes faulty items, and reports appropriately.

Observes Body Substance Precautions and uses PPE consistently.

Maintains sterile technique and reports any breaks immediately.

7) Equipment safety evaluation and airway cart readiness

Evaluates equipment safety during cleaning and restocking.

Ensures the airway cart is stocked, maintained, and transported promptly.

8) Staff development and learning

Completes mandatory annual training and participates in educational opportunities.

Shows initiative in learning new procedures.

9) Supply management and resource stewardship

Maintains PAR levels for designated supplies and uses resources responsibly.

Communicates supply needs timely to support unit operations.

10) Direct patient support and equipment setup

Sets up supplies and equipment daily for each machine, case, and emergency.

Provides required equipment to ORs as requested by anesthesia staff.

Follows protocols for equipment setup, maintenance, cleaning, and sterilization.

Performs duties independently with minimal direction.

Required Work Experience

Demonstrated competency in reading and mathematics, verified by aptitude testing

Preferred Work Experience

6 months to 1 year experience in a hospital setting

Ability to follow detailed instructions and prioritize tasks

Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills

Moderate physical strength; good hand–eye coordination and mechanical aptitude

Intact or corrected vision and hearing

Ability to work effectively under stressful or emergent situations

May provide supervisory support depending on experience
