Acting Beach Captain – HRM Beaches
Halifax Regional Municipality is inviting applications for the seasonal position of Acting Beach Captain – HRM Beaches.

The Acting Beach Captain ensures the smooth operation of beach services and maintains established safety and service standards when the Beach Captain is on scheduled days off. This role provides leadership to the beach team, oversees daily supervision, and ensures proactive hazard prevention and emergency readiness. The Acting Beach Captain upholds safety protocols, supports staff performance, and educates patrons on water safety. By maintaining accurate reporting, equipment readiness, and team coordination, this position ensures continuity of a safe, inclusive, and well-managed aquatic experience in the absence of the Beach Captain.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Maintain beach operations and team leadership during the Beach Captain’s scheduled absences, ensuring consistency in safety and service standards.Oversee waterfront safety through vigilant supervision, proactive hazard prevention, and effective emergency response.Monitor lifeguard and swim instructor performance to ensure compliance with safety protocols and timely completion of duties.Educate patrons on water safety and deliver swimming lessons and aquatic programs as required.Ensure equipment readiness, conduct safety checks, and maintain accurate reporting and documentation (e.g., population statistics, water gauge readings, signage updates).Provide inclusive support for individuals with disabilities by adapting activities as needed.Maintain personal fitness, certifications, and participate in ongoing training to uphold professional standards.Perform other related duties as required to ensure smooth beach operations.QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:Current Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard – Pool OptionCurrent Intermediate Workplace First Aid, CPR-C & AED from a CSA-recognized organizationCurrent Lifesaving Society Airway ManagementCurrent Lifesaving Society Swim for Life Instructor or YMCA Instructor Certification (or willingness to obtain before contract start)Waterfront lifeguard experience is an assetTechnical / Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:
A physical screening is part of the application process and includes:400-meter timed swim50-meter swim and carryConditions of Employment:Successful completion of training requirementsSuccessful completion/recertification of National Lifeguard – Waterfront OptionAn equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.  Applicants relying on education and experience equivalencies must clearly demonstrate such equivalencies in their application.

Security Clearance Requirements: Applicants may be required to complete an employment security screening check.

Please note – Testing may be conducted as a component of the selection process to assess technical and job-specific knowledge. Candidates who are selected for testing may be tested in a group setting, scheduled at the employer’s discretion.

WORK STATUS: Seasonal – July 1st, 2026 (Mandatory training camp mid-June – date will be outlined in offer letter) to August 31 or September 2, depending on location and weather conditions.

HOURS OF WORK: Must be willing to work a flexible work schedule.

SALARY: Non Union; $19.75 – $20.75 (as Acting Beach Captain) (plus 4% vacation pay)
