Position OverviewThe Accounting Manager oversees all core accounting functions and ensures accurate, timely financial reporting. This role manages payroll, accounts receivable, accounts payable, general ledger activity, and monthly/annual close processes. The position also leads a team of accounting staff, maintains compliance with GAAP, and supports continuous improvement of financial systems and procedures.
Essential Duties & ResponsibilitiesOversee all accounting functions including payroll, accounts receivable, accounts payable, journal entries, and monthly/annual closeDevelop and maintain accounting policies and procedures to support current and future operational needsEnsure financial reporting tools and processes are functioning effectivelyReview and approve monthly close entries including cost allocations, depreciation, accruals, and indirect entriesApprove and post journal entries prepared by accounting staffManage timekeeping systems, evaluate processes, implement improvements, and support timekeepersOversee payroll processing to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and compliance; serve as backup to Payroll CoordinatorHandle wage garnishment processing when requiredCreate and maintain financial reports and queries to support internal needs and ensure data integrityPrepare payroll journal entries and reconcile payroll data with third‑party provider reportsStay current on payroll regulations and compliance requirementsEnsure GAAP‑compliant financial reporting and maintain accurate financial recordsProvide financial insights to leadership to support decision‑makingHire, train, and retain accounting staffProvide coaching and professional development to team membersDrive continuous improvement of accounting systems and processesPromote strong teamwork and customer service across the departmentTop SkillsPayrollAccountingMonth‑end closeFinancial reportingFinancial statementsJournal entriesGeneral ledgerReconciliationPayroll processingSupervisory leadershipReportingEducationBachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Business Administration requiredIn lieu of degree: 15+ years of experience in an Accounting/Payroll Manager roleExperienceMinimum 5 years of related experienceAt least 2 years in a supervisory capacityFamiliarity with accounting software preferredDemonstrated SkillsStrong written and verbal communicationExcellent customer service and organizational skillsAdvanced Excel and Word proficiencyAbility to multitask and work proactivelySound judgment in financial projectionsEffective staff supervisionKnowledgeFederal and state funding regulationsMathematical and analytical conceptsGenerally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)Job Type & Location
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Hartford, CT.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $29.67 - $35.22/hr.
