**Description**
The academic specialty director (SD) is a SON faculty member who directly oversees a population-focused track within the School of Nursing (SON). Responsibilities include oversight of day-to-day specialty program operations to support faculty, staff, and students and other SON faculty responsibilities, including teaching, scholarship, service, and practice consistent with the URSON unification model. The SD works closely with the academic program director to identify program needs and support ongoing curriculum review/revision, innovation, and evaluation. The SD regularly communicates with the Office of Admissions and Enrollment Management and Student Affairs office staff for enrollment management and student needs. The SD consistently demonstrates MELIORA and ICARE values and fosters an inclusive, equitable, and supportive work environment.
**Supports academic program goals, SON, and the university with an emphasis** **on an individual population-focused track:**
+ Interprets the policies of the SON and university to students and faculty of respective tracks;
+ Provides input for the annual review, development, and assessment of track goals;
+ Represents the individual track and faculty within the SON and URMC and maintains effective, collegial relationships with other SON and URMC programs & departments;
+ Fosters student, faculty, and staff engagement;
+ Encourages scholarly activities for track faculty:
+ Advocates for service to the SON, university, and the local community;
+ Collaborates with the program directors to fulfill the SON DEI goals.
**Supports curricular and co-curricular academic activities for the individual population-focused track:**
+ Reviews current course syllabi to ensure adherence to SON and accreditation standards;
+ Encourages the development of new experiential learning opportunities as appropriate;
+ In collaboration with the program directors, monitors reports and develops necessary action plans for the track certification and licensure outcomes;
+ Assists program directors with faculty teaching and course assignments in collaboration with current and aspiring program faculty.
Experiential learning and clinical placement (MS programs only)
+ Coordinates in collaboration with course faculty to identify new opportunities for clinical and student teaching placements in accordance with licensure, certification, and accreditation requirements;
+ Provides oversight for the clinical learning experience.
+ Coordinates in collaboration with program faculty, new preceptor orientation to SON and specific courses;
+ Coordinates in collaboration with clinical faculty/experiential learning faculty and staff, formal preceptor recognition;
+ Collaborates with program directors, experiential learning faculty, and staff the annual capstone/clinical preceptor recognition event.
**Facilitates population-focused track recruitment, enrollment, advising, and progression activities to ensure an excellent student experience:**
Recruitment and Enrollment:
+ Collaborates with the SON marketing and communications team in the development and revision of program materials for internal and external SON communications;
+ In conjunction with program directors, establishes criteria for admissions and student interview processes;
+ Participates in the marketing and recruitment efforts for the track, including both onsite and offsite events;
+ Contributes to new student orientation.
Student Advisement:
+ Develops, implements, and evaluates, in collaboration with program directors, student affairs staff, and faculty, student-centered pedagogies and evidence-based student advising practices;
+ In conjunction with program directors, assigns academic advisors to all admitted students;
+ Serves as a resource and role model to track faculty regarding student advising.
Student Registration and Progression:
+ Collaborates with SON Registrars in the maintenance and audits of student records in SONDB and UR Student information system;
+ Assists students with academic progression inquiries and resolution of issues;
+ Collaborates with track faculty to formally assess student competencies;
+ Ensure students complete the requirements for graduation, licensure, certification, and accreditation.
**Participates in creating a collaborative, engaging, and supportive work environment:**
+ Regularly solicits feedback from track faculty;
+ Updates program directors through monthly faculty meetings;
+ Encourages and reinforces collegiality within the track as necessary;
+ Recommends an appropriate mentor for new faculty and academic instructional support staff;
+ Collaborates with the graduate clinical education coordinator to follow community partner guidelines;
+ Provides ongoing feedback to program directors in accordance with SON and university guidelines;
+ Supports course faculty regarding student concerns and issues, including follow-up;
+ Identifies opportunities for developing and disseminating academic scholarship (e.g., abstracts, manuscripts, podium, poster presentations).
**Qualifications**
**Minimum Qualifications**
+ Exceptional leadership skills, including the ability to work effectively within a team comprised of faculty, senior leadership, staff, practice and community partners, and students;
+ Demonstrated leadership in the population-focused clinical role;
+ Ability to implement accreditation criteria and state regulations;
+ Demonstrated ability to provide support and mentorship as an advocate for change and new ideas;
+ Requisite degree and credentials for the designated academic program;
+ Master’s degree
**Preferred Qualifications**
+ Doctoral degree or enrolled in a doctoral program is strongly preferred.
+ Prior clinical leadership experience;
+ Prior teaching experience at the baccalaureate/graduate program level, as appropriate;
+ Experience in online teaching and learning pedagogies;
+ Experience with professional nursing education, education technology;
+ Proficiency with Blackboard LMS;
+ Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite;
+ Proficiency with Apple IOS products, as appropriate.
