The School of Management at the University of Michigan-Flint is looking for two full-time Academic Advisors to serve our growing student population.
Reporting to the Director of SOM Student Support Services, SOM Academic Advisors help contribute to the school's retention and degree completion goals. This role helps contribute to the school's retention and degree completion goals. They will individually manage a designated caseload of students, providing comprehensive support throughout their transition in the university and journey towards degree completion.
SOM Advisors initiate and maintain regular contact with their assigned students to identify and address any obstacles to academic progress. Monitoring students' performance and collaborating with faculty, academic support services, and other university resources are a necessary components of this role.
Responsibilities*Student Interaction
Create a welcoming environment where students can safely develop ownership of their educational progressAdvise students of diverse backgrounds on course selection, graduation requirements, co-curricular opportunities, and student rights/responsibilitiesCollaborate with students to create, assess, and update course schedules and degree-completion plans using retention strategies, such as Mandatory AdvisingAssess individual student needs and refer them to appropriate university resources, including Financial Aid, Tutorial Support, Writing Center, Counseling and Psychological Services, Disability and Accessibility Support Services, and Career ServicesInitiate and communicate with newly admitted and continuing students to provide comprehensive academic advisingDocument all advising appointments/interactions in the appropriate University advising systemConduct new student orientation sessionsCollaborate with UM-Flint partners to provide a seamless and impactful college experience for all studentsRepresent SOM on campus committees and working groupsPlanning and Assessment
Use technology and data management to support the implementation and assessment of retention and student outreach programsCollaborate on specialized projects as determined in collaboration with your supervisorParticipate in professional development opportunitiesFulfill other assigned tasks consistent with the scope of the positionRequired Qualifications*Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or universityTwo or more years experience working as an academic advisor, or in a similar student-facing role, preferably at the collegiate levelBasic or above proficiency with necessary software such as Microsoft Suite, Adobe Acrobat, Google applications, web editing, and ZoomComfortable presenting complex information in face-to-face and online modalitiesUnderfill Statement
This position may be underfilled at a lower classification depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate.
The salary range at the Associate level is $37,800 - $47,200.
Candidates with the following education and experience will be considered for the Associate level.
Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or universityLess than two year relevant experience, comprised of one or more years working with students, preferably at the collegiate level, and/or less than two years of academic advising, or similar student facing experienceBasic proficiency with necessary software such as Microsoft Suite, Adobe Acrobat, Google applications, web editing, and Zoom.

Modes of WorkHybrid
The work requirements allow both onsite and offsite work and an employee has an expected recurring onsite presence. On occasion, the employee may be required and must be available to work onsite more frequently if necessitated by unit leadership or their designee and/or the job requirements.
