South San Francisco Unified School District

The South San Francisco Unified School District (SSFUSD) community includes 15 schools supporting 8,000 students in Daly City, San Bruno, and South San Francisco.

Our mission is that in partnership with our community, SSFUSD will provide exceptional instruction, engaging experiences, and equitable and accessible opportunities and resources to further support our diverse student body so that students are equipped to learn, thrive, navigate their future with purpose, and impact their community.

In February 2024, the School Board for SSFUSD adopted our new Vision and Five-Year Strategic Plan. Educators are at the heart of our priorities - exceptional instruction, engaged students, purposeful partnerships, empowered educators, and equity-centered systems.

The Role

SSFUSD is seeking a dynamic, equity-focused, and inclusive special education teacher to join our school community. SSFUSD refuses to accept that the educational outcomes of students in our district are overwhelmingly predictable based on students’ race, socioeconomics, ethnicity or learning differences. We remain committed to working each day to examine systemic, institutional, and individual biases in order to dismantle systems of inequities that will enable all students to thrive.

Special education teachers in SSFUSD provide resource support services to students with special needs in the general education setting, assist general education teachers in modifying and differentiating instruction for students with special needs, and work collaboratively with general education teachers to provide exceptional instruction in the classroom. Special education teachers also assist paraprofessionals in implementing instruction for students to meet goals and objectives related to students’ Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).

As a special education teacher in SSFUSD, responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Providing ongoing educational assessment and diagnosis of children for the purpose of identifying special learning problems and coordinating the development of individual instructional plans as appropriate for students identified with special needs.  Consulting with appropriate specialists regarding the support service to be rendered by such persons such as speech and language therapists, school psychologists, classroom teachers, school nurses, etc., in sharing the responsibilities for implementing the IEP.  Providing instruction as outlined in the IEP for identified individuals with exceptional needs. These will be students who are also, according to their IEPs, assigned to the general education classroom for half or more of their school day.  Providing direct instructional services for approximately 80% of assigned student contact time.  Coordinating special education services with the regular school program for each individual with exceptional needs enrolled in the district and monitors the implementation of the IEP.  Providing consultation, resource information, and material regarding individuals with exceptional needs to regular staff members.  Consulting and maintaining a close working relationship with the school psychologist in recommending prescriptive teaching for IEP plans.  Assessing student progress on a regular basis, revising short-term instructional objectives as appropriate, and consulting with appropriate support specialists regarding pupils who do not demonstrate adequate progress.  In coordination with the school psychologist, maintaining a watch and consult list which includes, among others, the names of all students in the school previously served in special education.  Collaborating with other teachers and school leaders on daily lessons, school-wide programs, and individualized student plans Meeting regular deadlines for daily lesson plans, submitting grades, and work samples Working on a team of teachers and school leader to provide consistency, support, and accountability to all students Engaging in professional development  Completing supervision duties on campus, such as morning duty, lunch duty, dismissal, and afterschool duty Engagement with and participation in the greater school community through attending events and activities Additional duties as assigned
